    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a detecting method which can be applied to bulk objects in which overlapped massive objects exist by a method wherein the balk objects in an observation position are irradiated with light from a light source installed in the obliquely upper part, light which is scattered from the bulk objects is collected by a camera so as to be image-processed and a particle size is detected on the basis of a maximum peak value in the luminance distribution of a collected image. SOLUTION: A screen to be observed is irradiated with light from a light source 3 which is installed in the obliquely upper part of bulk objects 2 to be measured, which are situated inside the observation visual field of a camera 4. Scattered light from the bulk object 2 on a belt conveyor 1 is imaged by the camera 4 which is installed just above the screen to be observed, and image information is fetched by an image processor. The fetched image information is converted into an electric signal, and the electric signal is sent to a computer so as to be image-processed. A peak value which is output on the basis of the luminance distribution of pixels on an imaging screen can be converted into information on the particle size of the bulk onjects on the basis of a relationship between a preliminarily found peak value and the particle size. An abnormality which is generated in the particle size of the bulk objects which are conveyed can be detected on the basis of a change with the passage of time in leak values which are photographed continuously at set intervals.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the level of molten metal or alloy having low melting point by irradiating light from a light source such that only a part of luminous flux is shielded by the molten surface and the remainder reaches the inner wall of a container in the advancing direction of light. SOLUTION: The surface of molten metal or alloy, which does not wet the inner wall of a container, is irradiated with light from a light source such that only a part of the luminous flux is shielded by the molten surface and the remainder reaches the inner wall of a container in the advancing direction of light. Reflected light from the molten surface and the inner wall of the container is received by a camera while forming a shadow at a part where the molten surface touches the inner wall of the container and the shadow part is detected as a molten level. More specifically, the surface of molten metal or alloy supplied from a molten holding pan 1 through a molten supply nozzle 2 into a mold 3 is projected upward in the center thereof because of the wettability thereof. When the molten surface is irradiated with light from a light source 10, a shadow part having relatively small quantity of arriving light is formed on the inner wall of the mold 3 on the side opposite to the light source 10. The shadow is picked up by a camera 11 and processed by means of a computer 12.
