    • PURPOSE:To make the start of an engine ever so smooth, by making a low speed cam so as to be selected in time of turning off a key switch, in case of a device changing the on-off timing and lift of a valve in a way of selectly using both high and low speed cams in order. CONSTITUTION:A controller detects a key switch 8 being cut off and after the cutoff, for a limited time, it has a delay circuit 73 delaying the cutoff of power supply from a battery 9 and a selecting signal control circuit 7 emitting a low speed cam selecting signal in order to shift a cam follower 22 to the low speed side during operation of the delay circuit 73. When the key switch 8 is turned off, the cam follower is forced to slidably make contact with a low speed cam regardless of engine speed just before the cutoff, so that engine starting takes place in a smooth manner.

    • PURPOSE:To improve responsibility of a cam when changed over according to an operating condition of an engine, said cam driving intake and exhaust valves open and closed, by joining and connecting a cam piece with a plunger which slides by the force of compressed air. CONSTITUTION:Under the state where a rocker arm 9 is rocked by the low speed revolution cam 5 of a cam piece 3 to open and close intake and exhaust valves, if changeover of said cam to high speed revolution cam 6 is needed due to increase in engine speed, a change-over valve not illustrated is changed over, whereby sending high pressure air into a pressure chamber 43 via a pipe 47. A plunger 29 is then forced to the right and the flange-like member 8 of a timing mechanism 10 is turned until the small diameter part thereof is engaged with a piston 22 so as to permit a retaining part 24 to be released from a retaining hole 25. The plunger 25 is then moved to the right. The timing mechanism 19 is engaged in the second retaining hole 26 and the cam 6 of the cam piece 3 which is moved to the right coincidently with the engagement may engage the rocker arm 9.

    • PURPOSE:To enable high response changeover control to be executed by making use of pressurized air as a driving source of a driving mechanism for moving a cam pieces, etc., in a captioned device where a pumping valve is changed over and controlled in two stages by moving the cam piece, etc. CONSTITUTION:A cam piece 3 is fitted in a bearing part 2 formed in a body on a cam shaft 1 rotatably and slidably in the axial direction. The cam piece 3 is formed by providing in a body the first cam 5 for low speed rotation, the second cam 6 for high speed rotation and a flange-shaped member 8. A cylindrical fixed member 17 is provided near the cam shaft 1 parallely thereto, and a driving part 18 is slidably fitted in the outer periphery thereof. A timing mechanism 19 is provided on the cam piece 3 side of said driving part 18, and said flange- shaped member 8 is inserted into a slit 27 provided in a cylindrical part 20. The driving mechanism 18 forces a plunger 29 to displace in the axial direction by means of pressurized air supplied to and discharged from respective right and left chambers 31, 30 thereof, and controls an axial position of the cam piece 3 via the cylindrical part 20.

The cam is provided with a flange-like member 8 to which a ratchet 19 to receive force of a spring 23 hits. The flange 8 is made up in such a form that receives large spring force when the cam is situated at its opening position and in time of its existing in this position, select resistance in the cam grows large so that cam selection takes place only when the valve still remains unopened.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce power loss of a pump in a resistance valve unit for feeding oil not supplied to a cylinder of a variable valve mechanism to various sliding parts of an engine, by employing such an arrangement that the valve opening pressure is variable and a valve of the resistance valve unit is opened at a low pressure when the engine speed is low. CONSTITUTION:The operation of an intake valve and an exhaust valve is controlled by feeding oil to a hydraulic cylinder 50 and using a high-speed cam 61 or a low-speed cam 62 selectively. Oil not supplied to the hydraulic cylinder 50 is passed through a resistance valve unit 11 and supplied to various sliding parts of an engine via a passage 12. A valve body 13 of the resistance valve unit 11 is opened depending on the pressure in a piston chamber 17. When the hydraulic pressure is lowered and a spool valve 21 is moved to the left, supply of oil to the piston chamber 17 is stopped, so that the valve body 13 is opened even at a low pressure due to drop of pressure in the chamber 17. Therefore, it is enabled to reduce the power loss of a pump.

    • PURPOSE:To vary rapidly the condition of valve opening and closing by a method wherein an upstream side of a resistance valve unit provided at the halfway of an oil supplying passage from an oil pump is communicated to a variable valve mechanism, and a bypass line of a resistance valve is opened or closed with a downstream side oil pressure. CONSTITUTION:A resistance valve unit 20 is provided on an oil supplying line 5 from an oil pump 3, a variable bypass valve 80 is arranged on bypass lines 70, 71. When the condition of valve opening and closing is varied, a change-over valve 61 is changed-over, an oil inside of an oil supplying pipe 5 is supplied into an oil cylinder device 44 of a variable valve mechanism 30. At this time, because of the pressure inside of the oil supplying pipe 5 decreases rapidly and the resistance valve unit 20 is closed, the whole quantity of oil is supplied into the oil cylinder device 44, the condition of valve opening and closing is rapidly varied. When the variable bypass valve 80 is opened due to the decreasing of pressure inside of an oil supplying pipe 92, the opening action is delayed certain time caused by the providing of a throttle 91.
