    • PURPOSE: To provide a nitrided steel which forms less base flaws and has excellent quality by contg. a prescribed ratio of Al and incorporating a small amt. of Ca therein.
      CONSTITUTION: Ca is incorporated at 1W40ppm in a nitrided steel contgl 0.5W 2wt% Al and contg. other suitable alloy components, for example, Cr, Mo, Ni, Mn, V, W, etc. to obtain an intended nitrided steel. The nitrided steel is manufactured in the following way: A molten steel is adjusted to prescribed components in a converter or melting furnace such as an electric furnace and thereafter 0.005W0.2wt% Ca is added to the molten steel and the steel is left still for a required time and is adjusted to allow about 1W40ppm Ca to remain. The m.p. of Al
      2 O
      3 in the steel is decreased by the addition of Ca and the formation of large-sized Al
      2 O
      3 inclusions is prevented. As a result, the generation of a material defect occurring in the large sized inclusion or base flaw is prevented.
