SOLUTION: An access request to the data base is generated from a business program, whether the request is storage or retrieval is first determined, when the request is storage, the management number of an external storage device for storing records is calculated by using a hash function and the records are stored in the external storage device according to the management number. When the request is retrieval, all the divided external storage devices are retrieved in parallel without using the hash function.

SOLUTION: In a database system of parallel execution type comprising a plurality of processing units, a dictionary administration part, a buffer administration part, and a search execution control part are provided. The buffer administration part, accompanied by reading of a new data block from the external storage unit, transfers the read data block to other processing units. The dictionary administration part administrates recording of the address information for locating the data block once read and transferred to each processing unit. The search execution control part executes and controls search on the data block in each processing unit according to the above address information. Thus, the frequency of reading from the external storage unit is reduced to improve the performance of all item search of the system.

SOLUTION: This parallel database system is constituted by connecting a front-end server(FES) 7, a back-end server(BES) 73, an input/output server(IOS) 70, and a disk 80. The number of processors of the FES 75, BES 73, and IOS 70 and the number of disks of the disk 80 and its division number are determined according to a load pattern. For example, FES:BES:IOS:disk = 1:4:1:8. Further, scalable system constitution is obtained by increasing and decreasing the number of BESs between at least one set and up to four sets according to load variation. Further, when the BESs are increased or decreased, data are not moved and only management information is moved. Consequently, expected parallelism is obtained and a fast inquiry process is actualized. The scalability of the system can be actualized.
