    • It is an object of the present invention to provide a magnetic data eraser being inexpensive and having improved safety with a simple structure.
      A magnetic data eraser 1 includes a power supply circuit 2, a receptacle 28a for accommodating a magnetic recording medium or a device incorporating a magnetic recording medium, primary and secondary coils 15 and 17 wound around an outer periphery of the receptacle 28a. The primary coil 15 is connected to the power supply circuit 2. The secondary coil is short-circuited. Excitation of the primary coil 15 through energization by the power supply circuit 2 generates an induced current in the secondary coil 17, thereby making an interaction between the primary and secondary coils 15 and 17. The interaction generates an alternating magnetic field, whereby the magnetic recording medium is degaussed, so as to erase magnetic data recorded in the medium.

    • A magnetic data eraser adapted to completely degauss a recording medium in a magnetic recording device to erase magnetic data with certainty and a method for erasing magnetic data, and further, a magnetic data eraser also adapted to erase recorded magnetic data on a magnetic recording medium or a hard disk drive incorporated in a computer and a method for erasing magnetic data.
      The magnetic data eraser (1, 3, 5) includes a power supply circuit (2) for generating an attenuating alternating voltage whose peak value reduces as time passes, a receptacle (20a, 28a) for accommodating a magnetic recording medium (22a, 32a, 33), and an electric coil (15) for degaussing the magnetic recording medium (22a, 32a, 33), and is adapted to apply the attenuating alternating voltage generated in the power supply circuit (2) to the coil (15) to generate within the receptacle (20a, 28a) an attenuating alternating magnetic field whose peak value of magnetic flux density reduces as time passes.

    • A bulk degausser apparatus for erasing a reel (22) of high energy magnetic tape includes a means for generating magnetic fields including a coil (L1) defining a window (34) for passage of the reel (72) of tape. The coil (L1) includes a first winding (L2) having relatively few turns and a second winding (L3), inductively coupled to the first winding (L2), and having relatively many turns. The apparatus also includes an ac power supply (82) connected to the first winding (L2) and a dc power supply (84) connected to the second winding (L3). A resonance capacitor (C1) is interconnected with the second winding (L3) for substantially balancing the inductive reactance of the second winding (L3) at the frequency of the ac power supply. The apparatus also includes an isolation relay (K3) interconnecting the capacitor (C1) and the second winding (L3) with the dc power supply, for isolating the dc power supply when the first winding (L2) is energized by the ac power supply (82). Energization of the second winding (L3) by the dc power supply (84) causes a tape (22) in the window (34) to undergo a dc magnetic field, and energization of the first winding (L2) by the ac power supply induces ac current in the second winding (L3) resulting in a reel (22) in said window (34) experiencing an ac magnetic field. A drive mechanism for translating and rotating the reel (22) of high energy magnetic tape with respect to the coil (L1), is also disclosed.
