    • The invention provides a negative pressure air bearing slider which comprises a slider body for flying above a surface of a recording disc during relative rotation of the recording disc, the slider body having a principal surface for confronting the disc surface, the principal surface having a lead portion, a rear portion, a first side portion and a second side portion, wherein the lead portion is spaced upstream of the rear portion relative to a longitudinal direction of the slider body which is coincident with a tangential rotational direction of the recording disc, and wherein the first side portion is spaced from the second side portion relative to a lateral direction of the slider body; first and second projections extending from the lead portion of the principal surface of the slider, wherein the first and second projections are spaced apart from each other in the lateral direction of the slider body, each of the first and second projections defining a central negative pressure air cavity and a forward negative pressure air cavity for the slider body, and a third projection extending from the rear portion of the principal surface of the slider body at a position centrally located in the later direction of the slider body, the third projection having a transducer mounted on a rear edge so as to establish pseudo contact with the disc surface while the slider body is flying above the disc surface.

    • The air bearing surface (ABS) of a head slider is formed with configured rails (48, 50, 58) and leading edge tapers (40, 42). In implementations of the invention, two side rails (48, 50) extend only partially from leading edge tapers to the slider trailing edge. The inner edges of each side rail (48, 50) are formed with at least two opposing angles so that at least two rail sections vary in width along the length of the rail. Each side rail (48, 50) is shaped with an oblique angle to reduce the rail width and a reverse angle to form the sections of differing widths. The leading edge side tapers may be angled for control of pitch stiffness of the slider. In one embodiment of the invention, a third center rail (58) extends from a center taper (56) to the slider trailing edge where the transducer (61) is located. In another embodiment, a short center pad is provided at the trailing edge. In an alternative design, only two side rails are used without a center rail or pad. The ABS geometries disclosed herein include angled rail sections that provide controlled pitch and constant flying height during transducing operation in a disk drive.

    • The fly height of read/write heads in multiple disk drives is dynamically adjusted to optimum fly height by a servo loop. The fly height is sensed in real time with a harmonic ratio fly height detector and compared to an optimum or reference fly height. The suspension system of each head is adjusted in accordance with the departure of the fly height of that head from the optimum fly height. The adjustment of the suspension system is accomplished by bonding a piezoelectric film to the flexible suspension arm carrying each head. The fly height is corrected for both radial and circumferential error as the head changes radial and circumferential position relative to the disk surface. The reference fly height, to which each head is moved by the servo loop, may be selectively changed in the fly height servo operation. This can be done to lift the heads away from the disk surface during track seek mode or disk drive sleep mode. The reference fly height can also be changed to lower the heads towards the disk surface during error recovery mode.

By controlling the supply side tape actuator 11a to move the movable pin 9a , the tension of the magnetic tape T at the head cylinder can be controlled. When the tape is replayed at speed different from the recording speed, the supply side tape actuator 11a and a takeup side tape actuator are operated differentially from each other to perform a good tracking.

    • A magnetic head-to-media backer device (1) comprising an elastically deformable reed-like backer member (3) adapted to urge a flexible magnetic media (5) into contact with a magnetic head (7), is characterized in that a rigid frame (9) has a cavity (11) defined at least by a pair of opposite walls (13, 15) shaped to hold the backer member bent in an arc with two opposite leg portions (17, 19) of the backer member captured within the cavity to permit them to be deformed against respective ones of the opposite walls and a center portion (21) of the backer member protruding from an opening (23) to the cavity to permit it to be depressed at least part way into the opening to deform the leg portions toward the opposite walls. Thus, when a magnetic head (7) is forced against the center portion the center portion (21) can be depressed into the opening (23) until the leg portions (17, 19) are deformed against the opposite walls (13, 15), thereby providing a very stable support for the magnetic head.
