    • A parameter measuring detector, i.e., radiation detector (10, 42), is subjected continuously to the parameter of interest of a monitored environment (ME) and intermittently to a predetermined level of the parameter from a check source (12, 40). The output signal of the detector is separately averaged during both the time (T1) the detector is subjected to the parameter level of the monitored environment and the predetermined level of the parameter and the time (T2) it is subjected only to the parameter level of the monitored environment. The difference between the two averages represents the predetermined level of the parameter as measured by the detector. This value is compared against the actual value of the predetermined level to determine the operational integrity of the detector. This signal processing technique eliminates the need for a check source of high strength which creates a radiation hazard and which is used to monitor high radiation channels such as a post-accident monitoring channel in nuclear reactor installations.
