    • A composite utility knife blade and method of making such a blade involves butt joining a tool steel wire (44) to a front edge of an alloy steel backing strip (34). The wire (44) is electron beam welded to the backing strip (34) to form a composite strip defining a first metal portion (20) formed by the alloy steel backing strip (34), a second metal portion (22) formed by the tool steel wire (44), and a weld region (28) joining the first and second metal portions. The composite strip is then annealed, and the annealed strip is straightened to eliminate any camber therein. The annealed composite strip is then hardened such that the first metal portion defines a surface hardness within the range of approximately 38 Rc to approximately 52 Rc, and the second metal portion defines a surface hardness within the range of approximately 60 Rc to approximately 75 Rc. The hardened strip is then subjected to at least two tempering and quenching cycles. Then, facets are formed on the edge of the second metal portion to form a straight, tool steel cutting edge along at least one side of the composite strip. The composite strip is then scored at axially spaced locations to form a plurality of score lines, wherein each score line is oriented at an acute angle relative to the axis of the strip, and the plurality of score lines define a plurality of blade sections and scrap sections located between the blade sections. Each scrap section is bent outwardly relative to a plane of the composite strip on one side of a respective scorn line, the composite strip is then pressed on an opposite side of the respective score line, and the respective blade section is then snapped away from the bent scrap section along the respective score line.

    • A process for manufacturing an obturator blade for a surgical obturator includes the steps of providing an obturator blade blank, pressing the blade blank to form intersecting surfaces adjacent one side, preferably, both sides, of the blade blank and forming a cutting edge adjacent an area of intersection of the intersecting surfaces to thereby form an obturator blade for incorporation in a surgical obturator. The step of pressing preferably includes the step of coining the blade blank with at least one coining die to, e.g., form at least one arcuate surface adjacent the one side of the blade blank. The at least one arcuate surface is one of the intersecting surfaces. More preferably, the step of coining includes forming arcuate intersecting surfaces adjacent the-one side of the blade blank. The arcuate intersecting surfaces may be substantially concave intersecting surfaces. Alternatively, the step of coining includes forming substantially planar intersecting surfaces adjacent the one side of the blade blank.
