    • A broaching insert 15, such as a slotter 16 or semi-finisher, which cuts through a workpiece is configured such that side cutting edges of the broaching insert contact the workpiece simultaneously. If the broaching insert 15 is a slotter 16, a center portion of the cutting edge 42 which interconnects the side cutting edges makes contact with the workpiece ahead of the side cutting edges. If the insert is a semi-finisher 130, the side cutting edges are scalloped so as to reduce shock upon engagement with the workpiece. The broaching insert 15 is ideally suited to the cutting of workpieces oriented obliquely relative to the direction of cutting R. In order to minimize snap-back of the broaching insert 15 as it exits the workpiece, the broaching insert 15 is sequentially passed through back-up disks 100,102,104, of gradually diminishing hardness, whereby the compressive loading on the insert 15 is relieved gradually.
