摘要： Almonds, other nuts, grains, dried or dehydrated fruits or vegetables, and other agricultural foodstuffs resting on a porous mesh conveyor belt (22, 54) pass continuously through a chamber (20, 60) in which they are contacted by a gaseous oxidizing agent at atmospheric pressure as the conveyor belt and food products move continuously through the chamber. In one embodiment, the chamber is disposed through a barrier (56) which isolates a raw product receiving region from downstream processing facilities to prevent cross-contamination downstream. In another embodiment, the chamber (20) is disposed through a barrier (34) which separates a husker (14) from a downstream Sheller (40) such that the shells are sanitized prior to releasing the nutmeats from the shells. In the preferred embodiment, the gaseous oxidizing agent is hydrogen peroxide at a 1.8 mg/liter concentration which flows up through the belt vibrating the food products without scarring them as the belt conveys the food products through the chamber for a duration of about 15 seconds to achieve a 3 log reduction in human pathogens.

摘要： An economical, yet effective technique for fumigating grain and other particulate foodstuffs involves the passage through the grain or the like of a carrier gas containing phosphine. The concentration of the phosphine in the carrier gas is within the range of from 4 to 200 micrograms of phosphine per litre. The flow of the gas is at a constant linear velocity within the grain, and the gas leaves the grain mass at a velocity of from 0.5x10-4 to about 2 x 10-4 metres per second. In addition, fumigation of grain in a storage facility having a plurality of grain silos (13) is effected from a single source (10) of a gaseous fumigant. The single source of gaseous fumigant is connected to a gas supply duct (11), to which gas inlet ports of the silos are also connected. The connection between each gas inlet port and the duct is provided with a respective valve (14) and a respective orifice plate (15), which is adjusted so that the pressure drop across the plate into the silo is substantially greater than the pressure drop across any other component between the gas source and the silo. With apparatus arranged in this manner, the flow rate of gaseous fumigant through the grain-containing silos in the facility suffers only a minor perturbation when a valve between the duct and a silo is opened or closed. This minor perturbation can be readily compensated by maintaining the gas pressure in the duct at a constant value.

摘要： A formulation for use in the controlled generation of phosphide comprises an intimate mixture of a particulate phosphide and a water-immiscible compound, the mixture having the consistency of an extrudable paste or a thick slurry. The phosphide, which is preferably aluminium phosphide or magnesium phosphide, comprises from 65 to 85 per cent (by weight) of the formulation. The water-immiscible compound is preferably paraffin oil, petroleum jelly, or mixture of these materials. A surfactant may be included in the formulation. Such a formulation (21, 41) can be held in a cartridge (20, 40) and added progressively to water (13, 33) in a reaction chamber (10, 30). Alternatively, the formulation can be packaged in a water-impermeable container from which a region can be removed to expose the formulation to water vapour in a gas flowing past the container. The water (13, 33) or the water vapour removes or diffuses through the water-immiscible compound from the formulation, then reacts with the phosphide to form phosphine. The phosphine, mixed with a carrier gas (usually air), may be fed into a duct (15, 55, 66) connected to a grain silo, for fumigation of grain stored in the silo.
