    • A workpiece blanking apparatus (1) has a die (16), a pad (10) for holding a plate of metal on the die (16), a blanking punch (7) for depressing the plate (W1) on the die downwardly of the die to blank a workpiece (W2) out of the plate (W1), and a counterpunch (20) vertically movably disposed in the die in confronting relationship to the blanking punch (7) and movable downwardly with the workpiece (W2) blanked by the blanking punch (7). A counterpunch urging device (25) normally urges the counterpunch upwardly, and a holding mechanism (26) holds the counterpunch in a lowered position after the workpiece is blanked by the blanking punch until the blanking punch (7) is spaced from the workpiece, the pad (10) is spaced from the plate (W1), and the blanking punch (7) and the pad (10) are lifted to a predetermined position. The holding mechanism (26) releases the counterpunch (20) in the lowered position and allows the counterpunch (20) to displace the workpiece (W1) out of the die (16) when the blanking punch and the pad are lifted to the predetermined position.

    • A punch assembly is provided with a positive retraction mechanism (46, 56, 52, 38) to remove the punch (26) from the media to be punched, thereby preventing binding of the punch in the media. The punch assembly includes a driving mechanism (42) to provide a driving force on the punch (26) and the positive retraction mechanism (46, 56, 52, 38) disposed to provide a retraction force on the punch operative sequentially following operation of the driving mechanism (42). The punch assembly, which is of a smaller size and more economical to manufacture, is particularly useful with an imagesetter of a prepress printing system. The punch (26) may be mounted in a cantilever manner to punch the opening as close to the edge of the media as possible without interfering with the laser beam of the imaging assembly. In this manner, the area of media available for imaging may be maximised and media waste minimised. Additionally, a shaft support mechanism is provided for the shaft upon which the retraction mechanism (46, 56, 52, 38) for each punch is mounted. When the punches (26) advance into the media, an oppositely directed force is placed on the shaft. The shaft support mechanism supports the shaft (46) when it is so loaded by the punches, thereby minimising deflection of the shaft (46) and allowing use of a smaller diameter shaft. Other equipment, such as take-up rollers which are used to transfer the media may also be fixed to the punch assembly. Similarly, a cutter assembly which cuts sheets of the media may also be fixed to the punch assembly.

    • It is intended to improve work efficiency by eliminating the work of attaching and removing push rods during installing and dismounting the a blade mount and also to reduce abrasion of the push rods for pushing punching scrap out of a punching blade. The first push rods 18 are inserted moveably in the first through-holes 16 formed in the knife cylinder and the second push rods 36 are inserted movably in the second through-holes 34 formed in the blade mount to permit the second push rods 36 to be abutted on the first push rods 18. A scrap push lever 30 is mounted on the outer end of the second push rod 36 to push out the punching scrap a and an eccentric cylinder 14 is provided inside of the knife cylinder 10 to push the first push rod 18 outward when pushing out the punching scrap a. The stroke of the first push rod 18 is controlled so that the outer end 18a of the first push rod 18 does not project from the outer periphery 10a of the knife cylinder. The first push rod 18 and the second push rod 36 are preferably made from one of self-lubricating resin and abrasion-resistant material.
