    • A tubular lock of the kind having a body and a barrel assembly which is mounted within the body for relative rotation about an axis. The assembly includes a tubular sleeve (4) and a number of disc tumblers located within the sleeve (4) so that each is rotatable relative to the sleeve and relative to one another about the axis. A side locking bar (9) is operative to prevent rotation of the assembly relative to the body, and that bar is rendered inoperative by insertion of a correct key into the lock keyway. The disc tumblers rotate in response to insertion of a key into the keyway and include a number of standard tumblers and a special tumbler. The locking bar (9) is inoperative when each standard tumbler is at a service position of rotation and the special tumber is at either a service position or a second function position of rotation. A service key (20) is operable to place all tumblers at the service position, and a special change key is operable to place the special tumber at the second function position and to place all other tumblers at the service position. When the special tumbler is at the second function position it releases a movable detent (23) which is otherwise operative to prevent axial removal of the assembly (2) from the body. But such removal is not possible until the change key is turned to rotate the assembly to a position at which a fixed detent (28) is aligned with a longitudinal groove (33) of the body. The key (20) is formed by use of a computer controlled machine which enables selection of any one of a number of key forming operation sequences, each of which produces a key (20) having characteristics to suit a particular lock.

    • A lock mechanism has a cylindrical housing (11) with an axial bore (15) therethrough, and a key-controlled core (50) rotatable within the bore (15) between locked and unlocked conditions and removable from and installable in the bore (15) in the unlocked condition. The core (50) has a plug (55) at its rear end which is mateably engageable in a socket (40) on the front face of a shifter (30), for rotating the shifter (30) within the bore (15) in response to rotation of the core (50), and thereby operating a latch member (48) coupled to the shifter (30). A radial tab (25) on the housing is receivable in an arcuate groove (45) formed in the outer surface of the shifter (30) for limiting rotation of the shifter (30) to facilitate retention of the shifter (30) in the single rotational orientation upon removal of the core (50) from the housing. An O-ring (33) on the shifter (30) frictionally inhibits rotation thereof.

    • A cylinder lock assembly (11) includes a core (82), a key plug (80) mounted for rotation in the core (82), and a key (10). The key plug (80) is formed to include a keyway (108) and a plurality of tumbler pin bores (110) opening into the keyway (108). The key (10) has a bow (12) and a blade (14) appended to the bow (12). The blade (14) includes a bitted portion (22) and a stop shoulder (56) at the tip of the blade (14) for positioning the bitted portion (22) in alignment with the tumbler pin bores (110). A separate drive member (16) is provided on the key (10) for rotating the key plug (80) relative to the core (82) to actuate the cylinder lock assembly (11). The drive member (16) is located between the bitted portion (22) and the bow (12) and is configured to cooperate with a bottom portion of the key blade (14) to provide the primary torque or force for rotating the key plug in response to turning of the key (10) in the cylinder lock assembly (11) so that the bitted portion (22) and an offset portion (26) of the blade (14) do not carry substantial torque transmission load between the key (10) and the key plug (80) to rotate the key plug (80) in the core (82).
