    • A latch assembly (121) for multiple-position mounting on panels (123) and bins with centrally positioned keeper hooks (139) is suitable for automobile gloveboxes. The latch assembly (221) may be configured for both lower and upper bin operation, without additional parts, and has an elongate structure that permits off-set latch handle (125) (paddle) positioning facilitating both left-handed and right-handed operation. A slide lock plate (231) engages a claw-type pawl (229) with the blade (233) shaped free end thereof. The pawl (229)is spring biased (175) to the open position, while the slide lock plate (231) is spring biased (161) to the locked, pawl (229) engaging postion. A rotating activation mechanism (239) links the operator handle (247) to the slide plate (145). When the handle (247) is moved, it contacts the activation mechanism (239) causing it to rotate, thereby causing the sliding lock plate (231) to retract from its pawl (229) engaging position. The sliding lock plate (231) has formed therein a track of gear teeth (257) forming a 'rack' member. The latch assembly (221) is of snap-together construction, which if needed allows for the reconfiguration of existing activation mechanism parts to suit a selected upper or lower bin and left-handed or right-handed installation. The activation mechanism (239) can be implemented by a pin-type cam follower (235), which follower is activated by a pocket cam (237), this cam being rotated with handle (247) operation. A pinion gear (265) mounted on the sliding lock plate (231) is connected to a friction clutch (227) to dampen the movement of the slide lock plate (231). The pinion gear (265)engages the sliding lock plate rack (231) teeth (275). The slide lock plate (231) carries a series of teeth (257) at its handle (paddle) end. A rotating paddle/ blade cam (283) can be substituted for the pocket cam (239). This paddle/ blade cam (283) engages the slide lock plate(231) handle end teeth (257) with one or more teeth (289) carried thereon, with this cam being spring biased (259) to the return position. A pinion gear (129) having a projecting lever arm (127) can be substituted for the paddle/blade cam. With the lever arm pinion gear (129), the slide plate (145) also includes a first track of teeth (149) on its edge on which the lever projecting pinion gear (129) rides. A dog leg-shaped projection (151) is added to the handle end of the slide plate which accommodates a second track of teeth (153) facing opposite the first track. The slide plate (145) is flipped-over between left and right hand operation which causes the pinion gea (129) to engage either the first (149) or second (153) tracks of teeth.
