    • An apparatus for the tape recording of a video signal, which is a signal of a bandwidth extending up to a prescribed maximum frequency, processes this signal to generate a folded-spectrum signal. The video signal is digitized and supplied to a digital band-splitting filter (90,91,92) with a cross-over frequency at one-half said prescribed maximum frequency, for separating the digitized video signal into samples of a lower-frequency-band component and into samples of a higher-frequency-band component. A balanced modulator (98,99,100) is connected for modulating a folding carrier wave of the prescribed maximum frequency. The modulation is done in accordance with the higher-frequency-band component to generate a balanced modulation signal, which is linearly combined with the lower-frequency-band component to generate the folded-spectrum video signal. Preferably, the sampling rate of the digitized video signal is exactly the Nyquist rate of the prescribed maximum frequency, thereby reducing the balanced modulation of a suitably phased folding carrier wave to multiplication of successive samples of the modulating signal alternately by plus one and by minus one.

    • An improved video signal recording system for recording a full bandwidth video signal on a limited bandwidth medium includes an encoder 10, coupled to an input terminal 5, for adaptively processing a composite video signal in response to a motion representative signal, and producing two signals; a luminance signal L f , having attenuated high frequencies subsampled so as to be folded into a spectral hole in the low frequencies, and being bandwidth limited to the limited bandwidth of the recording medium, and a combined signal C+M r including a chrominance and a motion component. An improved video signal playback system for reproducing such a prerecorded video signal is also disclosed. The playback system consists of a luminance signal playback circuit 60 for retrieving the prerecorded luminance signal L pb from the medium, and a chrominance signal playback circuit 80 for retrieving the prerecorded combined chrominance and motion signal C+M from the medium. A recording medium previously recorded by such a recording system is capable of being played back on a standard playback system without objectionable artifacts in the reproduced image.

    • A video recording/playback system includes in its recording electronics time-base correctors (TBC1, TBC2) both for luma signal and for color-under signal, the time-base corrector (TBC1) for luma signal being used to facilitate comb filtering and the time-base corrector (TBC2) for chroma signal being used to maintain luma/chroma tracking during recording. The video recording/playback system includes in its playback electronics time-base correctors (TBC3, TBC4) both for played-back luma signal and for played-back color-under signal, the time-base corrector (TBC3) for played-back luma signal being used to facilitate comb filtering and the time-base corrector (TBC4) for played-back chroma signal being used to maintain luma/chroma tracking during playback. With appropriate switching, the same pair of time-base correctors (TBC1,2 or TBC3,4) can be used in both the recording and the playback electronics of the video recording/playback system. A detector in the recording electronics determines when there is substantial time-base error in the video signal received for recording and conditions the comb filtering of the luma signal during recording to be carried out in just the spatial domain and not in the frame-to-frame time domain. The recording electronics includes circuitry for signaling the playback electronics, via a recorded signal, that the comb filtering of the luma signal during recording was carried out in just the spatial domain and not in the frame-to-frame time domain. The playback electronics responds to such signaling to adapt the comb filtering of the played-back luma signal to suit. Furthermore, time-base correctors are disclosed, which respond to sync signals. One embodiment contains PLLs generating a chrominance carrier, as well. Another embodiment contains PLLs generating a chromatic carrier, as well. Another embodiment has different clocks for low frequency and high frequency time-base errors.
