    • A method and device to transmit and/or receive fax data in a fax machine or a multifunctional device including a fax function. The method of transmitting the fax data may include transmitting fax data intended to be transmitted to an external device using a user datagram protocol (UDP), receiving a signal requesting that the fax data be re-transmitted from the external device when an error occurs in the transmission of the fax data, and re-transmitting the fax data to the external device in response to the request signal. Accordingly, the fax on a receiving end checks whether a transmission error occurred when data is transmitted from a fax of a transmitting end using a UDP, and, when a transmission error is present, transmits a request signal requesting that the data be re-transmitted to the fax on the transmitting end. At this point, the data is immediately re-transmitted. Therefore, reliability of fax data transmission is increased and the time required for data transmission can be reduced.

    • In a method for minimizing a data bottleneck in a Low Data Rate Network (LDRN), i.e. a facsimile network having a transmission rate less than the data rate of the facsimile machines serviced by the network, the LDRN has first and second sides and a line length threshold (L min ). The method comprises processing the facsimile transmissions in order to make the data rates of the LDRN and the FAX machines compatible, thereby minimizing any potential facsimile data bottlenecks that may occur in the LDRN due to its slower data rate. In the method, a data stream is transmitted from a facsimile (FAX) machine to the first side of the LDRN, the data stream having lines of data, each of which has a line length, and the transmitted data stream is processed in the first side of the LDRN, including dropping each data line having a line length exceeding L min .
      The data line following a contiguous number of said plurality of data lines (N contiguous ) may be dropped. N contiguous may be determined as follows: N contiguous = N min-sent + INT[N drop-window *R uniform (0,1)], wherein N min-sent corresponds to a minimum number of contiguous undropped data lines, N drop-window corresponds to a window of droppable data lines, and R uniform (0,1) corresponds to a function for outputting uniformly distributed real values between 0 and 1.
