    • A document scanner method and apparatus is provided which allows for the detection of the presence and size of a document (11) to be scanned. The scanner (50) is also able to determine whether the document (11) being scanned is skewed. The document scanner (50) includes an automatic document feeder (ADF 23), which includes a light pipe (70). The light pipe (70) on the ADF 23 redirects light from a light source (16) to extra CCD pixels in a CCD array (21). Accordingly, when a document (11) is present, the document (11) will come between the light pipe (70) and the light source (16) and the extra CCD pixels in the CCD array (21) will not detect light. When this occurs, a controller (25) will determine that a document (11) is present and will send commands to the ADF 23 to feed the document (11) forward and to the scanner (50) to begin the scanning process. Similarly, other light pipes (108, 110, 112, 114) along the document scan path redirect light to extra CCD pixels of the CCD array (21) and permit document size and document skew to be determined.
