    • To obtain a protective device that can prevent overvoltage and at the same time has an excellent safety and also to make chip type protective devices smaller in size, this invention provides a protective device comprising an inorganic substrate (2), a heating element (3) formed of an inorganic material, provided on the substrate, an insulating layer (4) that covers the surface of the heating element, and a low-melting metal piece (5) provided on the insulating layer. This protective device may be used in combination with a voltage detecting means making use of a zener diode, in such a way that the heating element of the protective device is electrically excited to generate heat when the voltage detecting means detects a voltage exceeding the rated voltage, whereby an overvoltage protector can be set up.

    • A circuit protection device designed to protect a pair of electrical circuits by fracturing at such time as an overcurrent condition has occurred in a first of the circuits, this novel device comprising a substantially flat substrate of non-conductive, frangible material upon which a resistive component and a fuse conductor reside in an adjacent relationship on a common surface. The resistive component is part of a first circuit, and the fuse conductor is part of a second circuit. The resistive component, at the time of an overcurrent therethrough, becomes hot and causes a heating of the near surface of the frangible substrate. The frangible substrate, as a result of the uneven heating of its opposite surface, elongating and then fracturing, the fracturing of the frangible substrate thereby bringing about a fracturing of the resistive component as well as a fracturing of the fuse conductor, thus to effect an interruption of the first circuit as well as a substantially simultaneous interruption of the second circuit. This novel device is admirably suited for protecting a subscriber line interface circuit.

    • An overload protector for a telephone set or other telecommunications terminal comprises an electrical component having DC continuity and DC resistance (13) mounted by leads on a circuit board, (11), the leads soldered to the conductor pattern. On application of an overload, the component heats up to a level at which sufficient heat travels along the leads to melt the solder (16,17). Usually both leads become unsoldered. One or both leads part from the conductor pattern under the effect of gravity; under the effect of a compression spring (18) on one or both leads and held in compression between component and circuit board; or a combination of both. A convenient component is a carbon block resistor, in the Tip or Ring line. A heat insulating member (20) can be positioned around the component. The insulating member can be a sleeve loosely fitting over the resistor (13) and retaining heat in the resistor, or a coating or layer directly on the component.
