    • The present invention is directed to a boiling water reactor wherein housed within the reactor pressure vessel (10) is the nuclear core (34) and an upper steam dome (18) connected to a steam outlet (14) in the Reactor Pressure Vessel. The improvement comprises a vessel (16) disposed in the steam dome (18) and containing a neutron poison (20) effective for inactivating the core (34). This vessel (16) is vented to the steam dome (18) for pressurizing the poison (20) contained therein. The vessel also is connected by a line (28,32) terminating beneath the core. The line contains an actuable valve (30) to release the poison (20) through the line (28,32) upon its actuation. The poison (20), when released, flows through the line (28,32) by gravity to beneath the core (34) for mixing with the reactor coolant which passes through the core (34) resulting in consequent inactivation thereof.
