    • The present invention relates to a method for calibrating the position of a holographic storage medium (16) in the direction of an optical axis (A) in an apparatus (1) for reading from and/or writing to holographic storage media (16), and to an apparatus (1) for reading from and/or writing to holographic storage media (16), which makes use of such a method. According to the invention, for calibrating the position of the holographic storage medium (16) the following steps are performed:
      - recording or locating (40) a test hologram in the holographic storage medium (16);
      - determining (50) the dependency of the diffraction efficiency of the test hologram on a shift of a reference beam wavefront relative to the recorded hologram; and
      - adjusting (60) the position of the holographic storage medium (16) responsive to the determined dependency.
