摘要： Systems and methods are provided for allowing the sender of a mail piece to obtain an accurate recipient address for the mail piece when the mail piece is being prepared. The mail processing systems (30) of the sender and recipient businesses are networked (28) such that communication can occur between them. When the sender is preparing a mail piece for delivery to a recipient, the sender can participate in an interactive session with the recipient's mail room, utilizing the networked mail processing systems (30), to obtain a correct recipient address for a mail piece based on a database (50) of recipient addresses maintained by the recipient's mail processing system. Since the mail piece is provided with an accurate recipient address, upon receipt of the mail piece by the recipient's mail room the mail piece can be properly delivered without requiring significant work by the recipient's mailroom to determine the appropriate intended recipient.

摘要： The present invention relates to a system and method for forwarding articles such as mail pieces. In operation, an initial determination is made as to whether the article has been previously handled and is subject to a redirection or ad hoc forwarding. If the article is subject to as hoc forwarding, another determination is made whether the article recipient has maintained an account to cover the expense of the forwarding. If no account is present, the recipient is given the option, for a limited time, to establish such an account. If no account is established within that time, the article is not delivered and may be destroyed. If an account is present, the article is forwarded and the account debited.

According to the invention, address matching requests are received by the system from a plurality of remote users located at respective machines ('clients'). Those requests are processed at the central system, and the results are returned to the client that made the request. 摘要： System and method for generating a Postnet code with a closed system metering device (150). Before an indicium is printed on a mailpiece, a scanner (120) is used to scan recipient address information printed on a mailpiece. Using the scanned information, the metering device (150) determines the Postnet code corresponding to the scanned information. A check is then made to determine if the recipient address information has changed from the scanned information. If it has not changed, the metering device (150) prints the postal code on the mailpiece. When the recipient address information has changed, the metering device generates a corrected postal code and prints the corrected postal code and the corrected address on the mailpiece.

摘要： A mailing list is created including destination addresses for mailpieces to be submitted to a carrier service for delivery. A unique mailpiece identifier associated with mailpieces (104) on the mailing list is generated by the carrier or other trusted third party. The unique mailpiece identifier is printed on the mailpiece (104) with which it is associated. the mailpieces (104) with the printed unique identifier are submitted to the carrier service. The carrier service obtains the printed unique identifier from the mailpiece. The obtained unique identifier from each said mailpiece is utilized to verify that data associated with the mailpiece has been processed by the carrier or trusted third party. When the unique number has been obtained from the mailpieces, the carrier service, if desired, may note this fact in the carrier records to prevent reuse of the unique identifier. The carrier service as part of issuing the unique identification may: charge the mailer's account of other fund depository for the carrier service charges associated with the mailpiece; and/or, assign a destination delivery code; and/or, provide address hygiene for the mailpiece; and/or change of address processing. When the unique identifier is obtained from the mailpiece, a delivery point destination code may be printed on the mailpiece, based on the corrected address. As an alternative, the destination delivery code may be provided to the mailer with the unique mailpiece identifier to be printed on the mailpiece by the mailer. Various cryptographic techniques may be employed to authenticate the mailer and the carrier service and to protect the transmitted information between the parties. The payment for the carrier services can be implemented prior in time to the entry of the mailpieces to the carrier service mailstream. Unauthorized mailpieces may be out sorted early in the carrier service processing procedure
