    • In order to present a system for generating a plan, that allows evaluation of a bending operation more effectively, a system for generating a plan is disclosed, which comprises a system for generating a plan which comprises a sequence of operations to be performed by a bending apparatus for bending workpieces comprising sheets of malleable material, the bending apparatus having a gripper for gripping a workpiece while performing a bend, said sequence of operations comprising a set of N bends for forming a finished workpiece from a stock sheet of malleable material, said system comprising: proposing means for proposing, for an mth operation within the sequence of operations, a plurality of proposed operations including a plurality of proposed bends to be performed by said apparatus; subplan means for providing a proposed subplan that accompanies each proposed bend; and generating means for generating a plan including a sequence of bends from a first bend through an Nth bend, by choosing each bend in the sequence of operations based upon the proposed bends and the proposed subplan that accompanies each proposed bend, wherein the system further comprises estimating means for estimating a cost to be associated with each proposed bend.

    • A shape data specifies the shape of an elongated product within an overall coordinate system. Local coordinate systems are defined on respective cross-sections of the elongated product in the overall coordinate system. The local coordinate system is designed to represent a stable die of a bending apparatus. The images of the elongated product protruding forward from the stable die within the respective local coordinate systems serve to specify the position of a movable die of the bending apparatus. The specified position reflects the deformation induced in the elongated product between the stable and movable dies. An ideal movement amount of the movable die can be determined based on the determined positions within the local coordinate systems. The determined movement amount can be utilized to prepare the control data for the bending apparatus. When the prepared control data is supplied to the bending apparatus, an ideal movement of the movable die can be achieved so as to effect bending on the elongated workpiece at a higher accuracy in accordance with the shape data.

    • A method and system are provided that enable an operator without skills in performing bending operations to easily and quickly perform precise bending operations on a sheet workpiece (w) by following a skilled operator's experience, hints or data. The method may include: storing data for a shape of a part; storing data related to a bending order for manufacturing the part from a workpiece (w); selecting tools for performing each bending operation; storing data for the selected tools or dies (D1; D2); storing bending press control data for controlling the operation of the bending press (20; 22) to perform the bending operations in accordance with the bending order; and storing bending operation support information for supporting an operator for performing the bending operations by using the bending press (20; 22). The bending operation support information may include hints or information regarding at least one of the following operations: attaching a protective tape on the shoulder of a die (D1; D2); arranging small tools (P5'; P6'; D6'; D5') on the bending press (20; 22) so that a punch (P1; P2) and die (D1; D2) are laterally shifted from each other; attaching a small die (D5'; D6') on a ram (43) with a fixing tape; aligning a punch and die relative to each other in a longitudinal direction; determining an original point of one of the punch (P1; P2) and die (D1; D2) relative to each other; positioning a workpiece (w) relative to a punch (P1; P2) and die (D1; D2); positioning a workpiece (w) relative to a backgauge device; and checking a dimension of a shape of the workpiece (w) after performing a bending operation.
