    • A scanning system, corresponding bracket and method are for scanning an object. The system has a frame defining a scanning chamber in which the object to be scanned is placed. The system also has a displacement assembly which displaces the object into and out of the scanning chamber. The system can also have a source which emits electromagnetic radiation or X-rays against the object within the scanning chamber such that the EM radiation passes through the object. The system can also have detectors arranged around the scanning chamber which detect the EM radiation which passes through the object. Each of the detectors forms a detector angle with a plane which can vary from one detector to the next. Similarly, the source can form an angle with the horizontal plane. The system, bracket, and method allow for the production of representative three-dimensional views of the object.

    • A linear array detector (LA) for use in creating an x-ray image after passage of a thin collimated curtain of these x-rays through an object is described. This detector has alternating portions of first and second types (Tk5,Tn5) along its length and of pixel size as measured along the length of the linear array detector. Each of the said types comprises scintillator material, optionally filter material (F), and detector means for detecting light signals corresponding to x-ray impingement on the scintillator material. The said first type of portion having a thickness of scintillator material and/or a filter such that the scintillator material provides a signal corresponding to the passage of the x-rays through an object or portion of that object of relatively low molecular weight and the said second type of portion having a thickness of scintillator material and/or a filter such that the scintillator material provides a signal corresponding to the passage of the x-rays through an object or portion of that object of relatively high molecular weight. In this way one can discriminate between higher and lower molecular weight materials and for example show potential explosive material which tends to be lower molecular weight material.

    • A binocular stereoscopic x-ray inspection system is provided in which the objects to be inspected pass successively under two x-ray beams, and over two respective line-array detectors upon which the beams fall, the two beams being set at an angle to one another in the plane parallel to the path of movement so as to capture left and right perspective views of each object on the line-scan principle. Those views are stored in respective frame stores, the video information from which is employed to create a composite image on a monitor that can be viewed as an apparently three-dimensional image. The technique is not limited to x-rays, nor to objects that travel nor to rectilinear movement but instead the relative movement could be achieved, for instance, by mounting two line sensor cameras on a rotating head.
