    • A system and method for monitoring movement of mobile communication devices. A system for monitoring movement of mobile communication devices, the system comprising:
      - a plurality of synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d) distributed over a monitoring area (26),
      each receiving unit (22a 22b 22c 22d) being for receiving and interpreting mobile communication signals, and for calculating a direction from which each mobile communication signal is received, and for providing data in response thereto,
      said signals comprising a particular unique identifier associated with a mobile communication device (21),
      - a means (27) for communicating the data between the plurality of synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d) and a control unit (23),
      the control unit (23) being arranged to combine the data associated with the particular unique identifier, received within a time window of predetermined width at said receiving units, and to calculate a position of the associated mobile device within the monitoring area (26) by use of said combined data,
      and, from plural sets of data, to track the movement of the mobile communication device (21) within the monitoring area (26),
      characterised in that, a range over which the plurality of synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d) is sensitive to the mobile communication signals is arranged to be two or three times a spacing between the plurality of synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d).
      A method of monitoring movement of mobile communication devices, by means of the system of claim 1, comprising the steps of:
      - at each of the plurality of synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d), receiving and interpreting mobile communication signals comprising a particular unique identifier associated with a mobile communication device, and calculating a direction from which each mobile communication signal is received, and providing data in response thereto;
      - communicating the data between the plurality of synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d) and a control unit (23);
      - arranging the control unit to combine the data associated with the particular unique identifier, receiving within a time window of predetermined width at said receiving units, and to calculate a position of the associated mobile device within a monitoring area (26) by use of said combined data;
      - tracking the movement of the mobile communication device (21) within the monitoring area (26) from plural sets of data;
      - arranging the plurality of synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d) such that a range over which the synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d) are sensitive to the mobile communication signals is arranged to be two or three times a spacing between the synchronised receiving units (22a 22b 22c 22d).
