    • The invention relates more particularly to an emulation device for emulation of a polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) of an optical transmission system, comprising the following: an emulator input for an optical input signal; at least one controllable double refracting polarisation transformation element having a transformation element input and output which is used for polarisation transformation of said optical signal; at least one double refracting DGD element having a DGD input and a DGD output, said DGD element having a differential group delay time (DGD) between two mutually orthogonally polarised propagation modes of the DGD element; and an emulator output for a PMD-modified optical output signal, said polarisation transformation element and DGD element being disposed in relation to each other in the optical signal path between the emulator input and the emulator output, whereby the double refracting axes on the transformation element output are twisted at a torsional angle which is different from zero degrees in relation to the double refracting axes of the DGD input. Also disclosed is a novel PMD compensation device and a novel measurement device.

    • The present invention provides a method for increasing the accuracy of measurement of mean differential group delay (DGD) from the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fiber. The method includes a systematic correction to mean-square DGD measured with any conventional mean to minimize systematic error caused by finite source bandwidth. The method further includes a systematic correction to the measurement of mean DGD and mean square DGD from statistics of the second-order PMD (SOPMD) obtained with frequency domain PMD-measuring apparatus. The probability density function (PDF) of either the vector or scalar SOPMD is applied, depending on which quantity is measured. The systematic correction is made to minimize the systematic error in estimating mean DGD, caused by finite source bandwidth, to achieve a two-fold reduction of the measurement variance equivalent to doubling the source bandwidth.

    • The invention relates to a system for compensating for polarization mode dispersion (PMD) related distortions in optical transmission systems and, in particular, transmission fibers comprising: a measuring device for PMD-related distortions; an emulation unit for adjustable PMD values; a polarization transformation element, which matches the polarization of the signal exiting a transmission system to the PMD emulation unit; an evaluation and control unit on which the output signal of the measuring device is located and which controls the emulation unit and the polarization matching element. The invention is characterized in that the emulation unit comprises a PMD emulator, which emulates second order or higher PMD and reproduces the PMD of a real transmission fiber in a most exact possible manner, and in that the at least one PMD emulator compensates one or more transmission channels and/or that the measuring device optically detects the PMD directly or via the detection of polarization states.
