    • A flare burner (30) that is particularly suitable for use in connection with ground flares and other types of flares in which it is important to control the height of the flame envelope created by the burner is provided. The flare burner includes a pre-mix zone (31) including a pre-mix chamber (32) into which air is entrained. A uniform mixture of fuel and air is formed in the pre-mix zone and caused to exit an air/fuel outlet in the top of the pre-mix chamber. In one embodiment, the amount of air in the fuel/air mixture that exits the air/fuel outlet (50) is in excess of the stoichiometric amount of air required to support combustion of the fuel in the mixture. Fuel is injected around the perimeter (69) of the air/fuel outlet, combustion is initiated and a flame envelope is created. By injecting a mixture of fuel and air that includes excess air into the center of the flame envelope, combustion of the central portion of the flame envelope is accelerated which allows more fuel to be flared with a given flame envelope height. The invention also includes a ground flare and a method of flaring fuel with a flare burner.

    • High-pressure air is discharged in the form of jets moving at a high velocity from nozzles mounted on a ring around the interior of the flare stack, placed at a predetermined distance from the flare tip and the portion of the surrounding stack wall downstream of the jets is perforated with air passages to admit atmospheric air. The high-velocity air movement induces a larger volume of air from the atmosphere to enter the stack where it rises to the flame zone, thereby lifting the flame and enhancing turbulent mixing of air and gas in the flame zone. Adequate stoichiometric amounts of oxygen to assure complete combustion are determined by measuring any variations of the mass flow rate of the fuel gas and/or undesired chemical and effecting a corresponding adjustment of an air flow control valve to admit a predetermined amount of pressurized air and/or atmospheric air to the flaring tip. A Coanda-effect body is positioned proximate the open end of the flare stack to improve the mixing of the air feedstream with atmospheric air and combustible components and to elevate the heat of the flame above the metal structural elements that control air flow at the top of the flare stack.

    • A waste gas burner (10) comprises burner means (12) into which waste gas is fed through injectors (15), each leading to an open end of a conduit (17) to cause natural aspiration of primary air (20). The primary combustion takes place in a reaction zone (19) surrounded by a peripheral wall (16) which is pierced by ducts (23) so as to introduce recirculated combustion products under natural draught. Secondary air intakes (25) surround the peripheral wall (16) of the reaction zone (19) and promotes secondary burning of the recirculated gases. The reaction zone has a high temperature short duration combustion without excess air and the secondary combustion takes place at a lower temperature with a longer retention time and in the presence of excess air so as to reduce nitrogen oxide formation and ensure combustion of impurities in the waste gas.
