    • A jam-tolerant geared rotary actuator (10), capable of performing in a normal operating mode and a jam-tolerant operating mode, which includes: an output spline member (50) for releasably connecting the movable ring gear (38) to the output ring (40); a decoupling member (60) which includes an input shaft (20) disposed within a hollow timing shaft (62), and a shear member (90) for sensing excessive torque and initiating the jam-tolerant mode; a sun gear spline member (96) for connecting the sun gear to the hollow timing shaft (62); an axial displacement member (100) for engaging the output spline member (50) with the movable ring gear (38) and the output ring (40); and an input engagement member (140) for releasably connecting the axial displacement member (100) to the input shaft (20). The axial displacement member (100) includes a decoupling bushing (110) and a double threaded decoupling nut (130). The decoupling nut (130) is disposed between the timing shaft (62) and the decoupling bushing (110). In the jam-tolerant mode, the decoupling bushing (110) and the output spline member (50) are axially displaced, thereby disengaging the output spline member (50) from the output ring gear, and thereby disengaging the output ring (40) from the movable ring gear (38). The axial displacement member (100) disconnects from the input shaft (20) as well.

    • A mechanical device for transmitting power includes a power-transmission pulley (3) rotatably mounted on a housing (1) of an automotive accessory, a drive plate (4) fixedly connected to a shaft end of a rotating shaft (2) of the automotive accessory, and a plurality of shear pins (15) via which the pulley (3) and the drive plate (4) are joined to each other. Each of the shear pins (15) has a notched portion (16) between opposing faces of the pulley (3) and the drive plate (4), and a flanged portion (17) formed at a position being offset from the notched portion (16) toward the drive plate (4) and interleaved between the pulley (3) and the drive plate (4) so that the notched portion (16) adjoins the flanged portion (17) and that both side walls of the flanged portion (17) abut the opposing faces of the pulley (3) and the drive plate (4). An inside diameter of each of a plurality of shear-pin insertion holes (18) formed in the drive plate (4), is dimensioned to be larger than an outside diameter of each of the shear pins (15) fixedly connected to the pulley (3), for easy assembling. The drive plate (4) is fixedly connected to the shear pins (15) by applying a tightening force in an axial direction of each of the shear pins (15) between a protruded end portion of each of the shear pins projecting outside of the shear-pin insertion holes (18) and an associated one of the flanged portions (17) of the shear pins (15).

    • A ball screw actuator for a control surface of an aircraft includes a rotatable input shaft (16) which is driven, in use, by a drive shaft (22) and which is coupled to a non-rotatably mounted output shaft (10). The input shaft (16) has a screw thread formation including a groove within which a plurality of spherical members (20) are received to provide a ball screw coupling between the input shaft (16) and the output shaft (10). The drive shaft (22) is arranged to impart a drive load to the input shaft (16) through an intermediate drive arrangement (23) including a carrier member (28) and a shear pin (30) which is coupled to the carrier member (28) and arranged to shear across a shear gap in the event that the drive load applied by the drive shaft (22) exceeds a predetermined amount, thereby to break the coupling between the drive shaft (22) and the input shaft (16). The shear pin (30) is coupled to the carrier member (28) such that the shear gap remains substantially constant throughout the actuator service life.
