    • A seal assembly for closing the end of a bearing includes a seal (40) and a shield (42) to which the seal is bonded. The shield has an axially directed mounting portion (50), an axially directed overhang (56) and a radial end wall (54) between the mounting portion and overhang. The seal has a pumping labyrinth (70) presented toward the mounting portion, yet spaced from it, a dirt lip (72) directed obliquely toward and contacting the mounting portion, and a secondary lip (74) directed obliquely toward but normally spaced from the overhang. The labyrinth is exposed toward the interior of the bearing and has pumping cavities (86) which impel lubricant back into the bearing. Between the dirt and secondary lip is an annular groove (78) containing a ring of lubricant grease which extends up to the radial wall and forming a barrier to the ingress of contaminants. If the ring of lubricant becomes temporarily pressurized, it deflects the secondary lip (74) against the overhang (56) to prevent excessive leakage, the pressure being relieved through vent notches (112) in the contacting edge of the lip.

    • The antifriction bearing (B) fits around a journal (6) at the end of an axle (A) for a rail car. The journal (6) extends from an intervening section (4) of the axle (A), and the intervening section (4) in turn projects from a still larger main section (2), there being fillets (8, 10) where the sections merge. A backing ring (20) fits against the fillet (10) at the end of the journal (6), while an end cap (24) fits over the opposite end of the journal (6). The bearing (B) includes two cones (32) which are clamped between the end cap (24) and backing ring (20), a double cup (30) surrounding the cones (32), and tapered rollers (34) arranged in two rows between raceways (46, 42) on the cones (32) and on the cup (30). The ends of the bearing (B) are closed by seals (36) which are fitted to the cup (30) and cone (32). The thicker intervening section (4) of the axle (A) is extended in comparison to its counterparts on traditional axles, and the backing ring (20) extends axially along the journal (2) generally no further than the location at which the fillet (10) emerges from the main body of the journal (6). This presents the back face (54) of the inboard cone (32) in a region where the journal (6) is quite stiff, thereby reducing flexing and fretting considerably. The inboard cone (32) is undercut at its back face (54) so that the stress concentration produced at the end of the interference fit between the inboard cone (32) and the journal (6) does not coincide with the stress concentration that develops at the fillet (10) around which the backing ring (20) fits.

    • An antifriction bearing (A) that enables a shaft (4) to rotate with minimum friction in a housing (2) includes a generally cylindrical outer race (46) located in an opening (12) in the housing, an inner race (48) located around the shaft, and rolling elements (50) arranged in rows between raceways on the outer and inner races. A sensor module (B) is located within the environs of the bearing, and it contains a plurality of sensors (110, 112, 114) which produce signals that reflect conditions under which the bearing operates.
