    • The present invention relates to a stable aqueous pigment dispersion including: an aqueous medium, pigment particles, and from 0.1% to 15%, by weight based on the weight of pigment, of a dispersant, the dispersant including: (1) a first water-soluble polymer having an acid number of from 0 to 80 and a calculated Mn of from 450 Daltons to 10,000 Daltons; and 2) a second water-soluble polymer comprising, as copolymerized units, from 30% to 100% by weight, based on the weight of the second polymer sulfonic acid monomer, or a salt thereof; and from 0% to 10% by weight, based on the weight of the second polymer, carboxylic acid monomer, or a salt thereof; wherein the second polymer has a calculated Mn of from 1000 to 25,000 Daltons; wherein the dispersant comprises a proportion of the first polymer to the second polymer of from 0.1:1 to 10:1 on a solids basis, and the first polymer and the second polymer are miscible in those proportions; and wherein the dispersant is substantially free of structural units of phosphorus acid monomers and their salts. The invention also relates to a method for forming the stable aqueous dispersion and a dry coating formed from the aqueous dispersion. The stable aqueous dispersion is useful, inter alia , for forming certain composite particles.

    • The invention provides a method for preparing a titanium dioxide product, comprising the steps of: -providing a dispersion comprising titanium dioxide particles, wherein the dispersion contains from 50g/l to 600g/l TiO
      2 ; and then, in any order, -applying an inorganic coating to the titanium dioxide particles, whilst maintaining colloidal stability before and/or during the coating step; -concentrating the dispersion, by subjecting the dispersion to the effects of cross-flow filtration and continuing the cross-flow filtration process until the dispersion is in a concentrated form that contains 800g/l or more TiO
      2 ; so as to provide a titanium dioxide product in the form of a concentrated dispersion of coated particles. The concentrated dispersion of coated particles may optionally be dispersed within a vehicle to obtain a pigment product.

    • The invention provides a process for producing an aqueous dispersion of particles of rutile titanium oxide, which comprises: a first step in which after a chloride ion concentration of an aqueous solution of titanium tetrachloride is adjusted to 0.5 mole/L or more and less than 4.4 mole/L, the aqueous solution of titanium tetrachloride is heated at a temperature in a range of from 25°C to 75 °C to hydrolyze the titanium tetrachloride, thereby obtaining a slurry containing the thus precipitated particles of rutile titanium oxide; a second step in which the slurry obtained in the first step is filtered and washed with water to remove water-soluble salts dissolved therein from the slurry; a third step in which the slurry obtained in the second step is subjected to a hydrothermal reaction in the presence of an organic acid; a fourth step in which the slurry obtained in the third step is filtered and washed with water to remove water-soluble salts dissolved therein from the slurry; a fifth step in which an acid is added to the slurry obtained in the fourth step to deflocculate the slurry, and the resulting slurry is subjected to wet dispersion treatment, thereby obtaining a dispersion; and a sixth step in which excess acid and water-soluble salts are removed from the dispersion obtained in the fifth step.
