    • Example embodiments may facilitate altitude control by a balloon in a balloon network. An example method involves: (a) causing a balloon to operate in a first mode, wherein the balloon comprises an envelope, a high-pressure storage chamber, and a solar power system, (b) while the balloon is operating in the first mode: (i) operating the solar power system to generate power for the balloon and (ii) using at least some of the power generated by the solar power system to move gas from the envelope to the high-pressure storage chamber such that the buoyancy of the balloon decreases; (c) causing the balloon to operate in a second mode; and while the balloon is operating in the second mode, moving gas from the high-pressure storage chamber to the envelope such that the buoyancy of the balloon increases.

    • A thermal aircraft, such as a hot air load-carrying balloon (1) which includes a balloon envelope (2) having a deflation aperture (3) therein and a venting valve or operculum (16) designed to removably cover and seal the aperture and to be opened and/or closed rapidly so as to assist in the control of the balloon, forming both a deflation panel and a manoeuvring port for the balloon. The venting valve (16) is removably and releasably secured to the balloon envelope adjacent the periphery of the aperture (3), and means (17, 21, 23, 28) are provided for controllably and selectively positioning the valve in the aperture for open and closed dispositions thereof. Separate controls are provided firstly (17, 17a, 17b, 21) to extend the valve (16) to its maximum surface area, at which point it removably covers and seals the aperture and/or to allow controlled venting of hot air therefrom, and secondly (23, 28) to allow reefing of the valve (16) from the aperture (3) for rapid deflation of the envelope (2). This provides the pilot with a great deal of control over the flight of the balloon, especially during final landing procedures and especially during such procedures in gusty or windy conditions, contributing significantly to control and safety.
