    • A seat belt retractor (20) has a spool (100) and a web sensor (200) configured to activate at a desired rotational acceleration of the spool (100). The web sensor (200) includes an inertia wheel (202) rotatable relative to the spool. A sensor (210) has one or more lock teeth (220, 222) thereon. The web sensor pawl (210) is rotationally supported relative to the spool (100). The web sensor (210) includes a torsion spring (204) having a center coiled portion (205) and first and second spring leg (206a, 206b). The inertia wheel (202) includes a plurality of pins (308a - e), the placement of each pin configured to correspond to a set level of rotational acceleration. The center coiled portion (205) of the torsion spring (204) is centrally disposed on the inertia wheel (202). The first spring leg (206a) secured to the spool (100) or pilot wheel. The second spring leg (206b) secured to a one of the pins. The inertia wheel (202) is configured to cause a relative rotation relative to the spool (100) as the spool is rapidly moved. The relative rotation causes the movement of the web sensor (210) from a rest position to an activated position.

    • An emergency locking reel for a safety belt and being of the kind having a frame (1) which is securable to a support, a spool (3) rotatably mounted on that frame (1), and locking means operable to prevent rotation of that spool in a belt unwinding direction. The locking means comprises a toothed ring (19) secured to the frame (1) and a pawl (20) rotatable with the spool (3) and movable relative thereto to engage the ring (19). According to the invention, an inertia plate (64) is provided separate from the pawl (20) and is mounted on the spool spindle (8) for limited relative rotation therewith and carries a detent (66) which responds to relative rotation between the wheel (29) and inertia plate (64) to stop rotation of the wheel (29) and thereby cause the pawl (20) to engage the ring (19). A spring (74) resists that relative rotation between the wheel (29) and inertia plate (64). The housing (5) for the locking means (19,20) is symmetrical about a plane (63) which contains the spindle axis (25) and a sensor (49) responsive to vehicle deceleration is also located on that plane (63). The sensor (49) is securable to the housing (5) in any of a plurality of positions without disturbing the aforementioned symmetry. Furthermore, each tooth (22) of the locking ring (19) is symmetrical about a plane (24) containing the spindle axis (25). An end plate (17) of the housing (5) has, as integral parts, a bearing (14) for the spindle (8) and locating means (61,56) for the locking ring (19) and sensor (49) respectively, thereby simplifying assembly of the reel. A wedge-type retainer (95) secures an end of the belt (92) to the reel by locating in a slot (91) of the spool (3) and clamping the belt (92) in three separate zones.

    • In a webbing retractor (10), when a V gear (50) has been rotated in a withdrawal direction following a spool (20) and a W pawl (60) has been relatively displaced with respect to the V gear (50) by inertial force, the rotation of the V gear (50) is regulated and a lock plate (46) regulates the rotation of the spool (20). A first center-of-gravity adjusting hole (66) and a second center-of-gravity adjusting hole (68) are disposed in the W pawl (60), and the sensitivity of detecting the inertial force is adjusted as a result of a center-of-gravity position of the W pawl (60) being adjusted. The first center-of-gravity adjusting hole (66) and the second center-of-gravity adjusting hole (68) are disposed away from an outer peripheral surface of the W pawl (60), so the center-of-gravity position of the W pawl (60) becomes adjustable without having to change the outer peripheral shape of the W pawl (60).
