摘要： An image forming device and method are provided which reduce erroneous detection of a border between transfer material areas when forming a new image by using unused portions of partially used transfer material areas. The image forming device forms an image having a first size or a second size which is one-half of the first size or smaller on a recording medium by transferring transfer materials respectively for transfer material areas, while feeding a strip-shaped transfer medium on which the transfer material areas each having the first size and respectively corresponding to the transfer materials are repeatedly arranged in a predetermined sequence in the longitudinal direction thereof. The transfer medium is fed in a forward direction until an unused portion of a subsequent transfer material area adjacent to a used portion of a transfer material area reaches the detection position and thereafter fed in the reverse direction, so that the border between the used and unused portions is detected from the unused portion side, when a second-size image is newly formed by using unused portions in the respective transfer material areas having been used to form a second-size image.

摘要： A ribbon drive assembly for optimizing the tension across a ribbon supply in a thermal transfer printer comprising a supply spindle and a take up spindle operable for cooperating with each other such that the ribbon supply is fed from the supply spindle through a print station and metered onto the take up spindle. Each spindle is provided with and connected to a motor, a plurality of gears, and a rotary encoder such that the spindles may be independently controlled by a control processor. The control processor is operable for monitoring, detecting, and controlling the operation of the motors and spindles. During operation and in order to maintain a constant ribbon tension, the torque on the motors are continuously adjusted in accordance with various data provided by the printer's processor.

摘要： A thermal printer for printing on a continuous print medium by ink transfer from a thermal print ribbon has a print head (22) which is pivotally mounted and which is driven in an oscillatory nodding motion by means of a stepper motor (14) so as repeatedly to bring a linear array of energisable printing elements to bear against a platen roller (44). Both the element array and the platen (44) extend transversely to respective paths of travel of the print medium (50) and the ribbon (42). The print medium is fed through the printer from an inlet region (53), between the platen and print head, and thence to an outlet region (54). The instantaneous rate of travel of the print medium past the print head is substantially the same as the rate of feed of print medium to the printer. Typically this rate is of the order of 250 to 400 mm per second. The ribbon (42) also travels between the print head and the platen, overlying the print medium and is driven in such a manner that it travels at the same rate as the print medium during each printing operation. Between each printing operation the ribbon (42) is driven in reverse to rewind any unused portion of ribbon which has overshot the printhead (22).
