    • In a process for producing tyres for vehicle wheels, a pair of annular support elements (60) is arranged in a first operative position in which each of them is axially adjacent to a respective axial end portion (50a) of a forming support (50). At least one carcass ply is then deposited on the forming support (50) so that opposite axial end edges of the carcass ply are supported by the aforementioned annular support elements (60). Thereafter, the annular support elements (60) are brought into a second operative position in which each of them is axially distant from the forming support (50) and has a second diameter that is greater than said first diameter. A respective annular anchoring structure is then associated with each of the axial end edges of the carcass ply. An apparatus (100) that carries out the aforementioned process is described.

    • An improved machine for fabricating tire carcasses. The machine comprises in combination a rotatable main drum (16) upon which ply material is laid up; auxiliary drums (68,70) of a reduced diameter axially aligned at the ends of the main drum (16) to define therebetween a step for the placement of bead rings; electro magnetic bead setters reciprocable from retracted positions axially exterior of the main (16) and auxiliary drums (68,70) and advanced positions to move magnetically supported bead rings (22) to the step between the drums; bladders positionable between radially interior and exterior positions with regard to main drum (16) whereby their inflation will turn up the edges of the ply material to encompass the bead rings (22) at the steps and fabricate the tire carcass; bladder cages reciprocable to guide the inflation of the bladders; drive means to reciprocate the bladder cages between the retracted and advanced positions; and means to couple and uncouple the bladder cages and bead setters whereby the bead setters may reciprocate with the bladder cages during the bead setting and the bladder cages may reciprocate independently of the bead setters during edge turn up. Also disclosed is a method of fabricating tire carcasses.

    • The tire building machine comprises a tire building drum (22) or shaper, annular bladders (82) adjacent each end and a bead setter and bladder pusher mechanism (198) movable axially of the drum selectively to set a tire bead in proper position and to push and effectively roll the bladder (82) when inflated to cause the ply edges of the tire to be wrapped about the bead without air entrapment and stitched securely. Such mechanism includes a bead setting and pushing ring mounted for axial movement and hydraulic actuators (158) are provided for effecting such movement. The ring has a flat face, a short axially extending radially inner annular surface or shelf (210) for restricting expansion of a portion of the bladder rearwardly of the face when inflated thereunder, and a rounded inner peripheral edge or bead (212) projecting beyond the shelf which grips the bladder when inflated to prevent relative sliding movement of the bladder and ring during bladder push. There is further provided a movable stop (166) for precisely locating bead set and bladder pick-up positions of the ring and bead clamps for holding the tire bead to the ring during the bead set operation.
