    • A method of manufacturing a honeycomb structure including a honeycomb unit includes the steps of (a) forming a honeycomb molded body containing inorganic particles having a specific surface area of 50 m 2 /g or more and at least one of a molding aid and an organic binder and having a plurality of cells extending from a first end face to a second end face of the honeycomb molded body along a longitudinal direction thereof and separated by a plurality of cell walls; (b) placing the honeycomb molded body in a degreasing apparatus with the first end face facing downward and the second end face facing upward; (c) feeding introduced gas into the degreasing apparatus; (d) degreasing the honeycomb molded body at a temperature of 200 °C to 400 °C; and (e) firing the degreased honeycomb molded body at a temperature of 500 °C to 900 °C and thereby obtaining the honeycomb unit. The introduced gas is caused to flow from the first end face to the second end face inside the honeycomb molded body through the cells thereof, and the introduced gas contains oxygen and nitrogen with an oxygen-to-nitrogen ratio of 1.5:98.5 (vol%) to 5.5:94.5 (vol%).
