摘要： The present invention provides a method of promoting local bone growth by administering a therapeutic amount of a Sost antagonist to a mammalian patient in need thereof. Preferably, the Sost antagonist is an antibody or FAB fragment selectively recognizing any one of SEQ ID NOS: 1-23. The Sost antagonist may be coadministered together or sequentially with a matrix conducive to anchoring new bone growth. Orthopedic and Periodontal devices comprising an implantable portion adapted to be permanently implanted within a mammalian body and bearing an external coating of a Sost antagonist are also disclosed, as it a method of increasing bone density by administering to a mammalian patient a therapeutic amount of a Sost antagonist together with an antiresorptive drug.

摘要： Porous calcium phosphate implant compositions that approximate the chemical composition of natural bone material are provided. In addition to calcium phosphate, the compositions include an effervescent agent to promote the formation of interconnected pores and a cohesiveness agent to maintain the shape and hardness of the hardened composition. When introduced at an implant site, the calcium phosphate compositions are remodeled into bone. Methods for using the calcium phosphate compositions, e.g. to repair or replace bone, are also provided.

摘要： Articles, methods of making, and uses for modifying surfaces for simultaneously providing repellency and selective binding of desired moieties are disclosed. The repellant surfaces comprise a substrate and a lubricating layer immobilized over the substrate surface having a lubricating liquid having an affinity with the substrate. The substrate and the lubricating liquid are attracted to each other together by non-covalent attractive forces. The repellent surface further includes a binding group extending over the surface of the lubricating layer and the binding group has an affinity with a target moiety. The lubricating layer and the substrate form a slippery or repellent surface configured and arranged for contact with a material that is immiscible with the lubricating liquid and the immiscible material contains the target moiety.

摘要： The invention relates to the identification of new regulators of the innate immune system, in particular the complement system. More particularly, the invention relates to specific C5 convertase inhibitors. Said novel inhibitors are particularly useful for treating inflammatory diseases in which the complement system is involved. In a first embodiment, the invention is directed to the use of CFHR proteins and functional fragments or functional derivatives thereof for preventing inflammatory reactions. In another embodiment, the invention is directed to the use of said CFHR proteins for preventing complement activation during transplantations and dialyses and for coating devices that enter in contact with blood or body fluids, especially implants. According to the invention, a pharmaceutical composition comprising functional CFHR protein in combination with functional factor H is also prepared. In yet another embodiment, the invention is directed to the preparation of monoclonal antibodies which specifically detect CFHR proteins, and the use thereof in methods for determining CFHR in body fluids. Said methods are particularly suitable for diagnosing inflammatory diseases.

摘要： A biologically engineered construct comprising of a polymeric biomatrix (100), designed with a nanophase texture (106), and a therapeutic agent (104 or 300) for the purpose of tissue regeneration and/or controlled delivery of regenerative factors and therapeutic substances after it is implanted into tissues, vessels, or luminal structures within the body. The therapeutic agent (104 or 300) may be a therapeutic substance (104) or a biological agent (300), such as antibodies, ligands, or living cells. The nanophase construct is designed to maximize lumen size, promote tissue remodeling, and ultimately make the implant more biologically compatible. The nano-textured polymeric biomatrix (100) may comprise one or more layers containing therapeutic substances (104) and/or beneficial biological agents (300) for the purpose of controlled, physiological, differential substance/drug delivery into the luminal and abluminal surfaces of the vessel or lumen, and the attraction of target molecules/cells that will regenerate functional tissue. The topographic and biocompatible features of this layered biological construct provides an optimal environment for tissue regeneration along with a pro grammed -release, drug delivery system to improve physiological tolerance of the implant, and to maximize the cellular survival, migration, and integration within the implanted tissues.
