    • A corn header (12) for an agricultural harvester (10) is disclosed. The header (12) includes a chassis (14) having first and second lateral ends (126,128) and a plurality of row units defining crop receiving gaps. The header (12) further includes a power takeoff member (172a,172b) having a first end operatively connected to the agricultural harvester (10). A plurality of chopping units is carried by the chassis (14) adjacent the row units, each chopping unit including a rotating blade configured to span a crop receiving gap of the row unit. A drive assembly (165) including a gearbox (174a,174b), driveshaft (176a,176b) and secondary gearbox (178a,178b) is operably connected to the second end of the power takeoff member (172a,172b). The drive shaft (176a,176b) extends from the gearbox (174a,174b) to the secondary gearbox (178a,178b) disposed between the first and second lateral ends (126,128) of the chassis (14). The drive shaft (176a,176b) is operably connected to a rotating line shaft (156,160) of the row units or the chopping units via the secondary gearbox (178a,178b).

The threshing apparatus includes a plurality of screw auger conveyors (30, 40) arranged in upper and lower planes that receive the crop and urge the crop into diminishing space between adjacent auger conveyors (30, 40), the space defined by the auger flighting (34, 44) and the expandingly tapered auger shanks (32, 42). Kernels are separated from the cob as the ears are urged rearwardly in the threshing apparatus. The header (15) may include screens and the like for cleaning the grain of chaff prior to transferring to on-board storage or chaff removal may occur after the grain is off-loaded from the harvester.
