    • A system for modifying and utilizing hydrocarbon fuels consisting of approximately two-thirds light fuel fractions and one-third heavy fuel fractions by volume in the operation of an internal combustion engine. The system includes a first container (3) for storing the hydrocarbon fuel, a separator (2) including a heat source (45, 47) for vaporizing the light fuel fraction in the absence of air to prevent liquid phase oxidation of the light vapor fractions produced therein, a second container (61) for storing the heavy fuel fractions removed from the separator (20) and a fuel control system (31) which regulates the flow of light vapor fractions to a carburetor (87) in accordance with engine speed (37) and operator demand (39) while maintaining a higher than stoichiometric air to duel ratio.
