    • A control system for a moveable control surface on a wing or stabilizer of an aircraft, for example a flying car, comprising: a wing or stabilizer having a moveable control surface (20, 22); a mounting structure (30) for mounting the wing or stabilizer on the body of an aircraft; a hinge connection (32) between the wing or stabilizer and the mounting structure, to allow the wing or stabilizer to be moved between extended and folded positions; and a control shaft mounted on the mounting structure and extending into the wing or stabilizer, the control shaft being configured to rotate under the influence of a control input so as to move the control surface on the wing or stabilizer; wherein the control shaft comprises separable first (36) and second shaft parts (44), the first part being mounted on the mounting structure, and the second part being mounted on the wing or stabilizer, the first shaft part having a peg (38) with a non-cylindrical outer surface, and the second shaft part defining a bore (46) with a non-cylindrical inner surface, such that, when the wing or stabilizer is in the extended position, the peg is engaged in the bore so as to prevent relative rotation of the first and second shaft parts; the system further comprising a resiliently-biased locking pin (62) mounted on the wing, the locking pin having a non-cylindrical outer surface, wherein the locking pin is configured such that it is biased into the bore when the peg on the first shaft part is withdrawn from the bore so as to lock the second shaft part against rotation and prevent movement of the control surface.

    • A wing and flap system for an aircraft comprising: a wing (16); and a deployable flap (30) connected to the wing, the flap being moveable between a first position in which a trailing edge portion of the wing substantially overlaps the flap and the angle of incidence of the flap is substantially the same as the angle of incidence of the wing, and a second position in which the trailing edge (33) of the flap is behind the trailing edge (34) of the wing and the angle of incidence of the flap is greater than that of the wing, and an intermediate position between the first and second positions, in which the trailing edge of the flap is behind the trailing edge of the wing and the angle of incidence of the flap is substantially the same as that of the wing; and further comprising a flap operating mechanism for moving the flap between the first, second, and intermediate positions, comprising: a driven toothed pinion (52) mounted in the wing; and first (36) and second (38) struts, each substantially aligned with a plane including a chord of the wing and extending between the pinion and the flap, each strut having a toothed rack (40, 42) engaged with the toothed pinion such that operation of the pinion moves each strut in a direction substantially aligned with a plane including a chord of the wing, the first strut being connected to the flap relatively closer to the leading edge thereof, and the second strut being connected to the flap relatively closer to the trailing edge thereof. The system can be used in a flying car having foldable wings.

A method of operating the vehicle comprises: placing the vehicle in the intermediate configuration with the road wheels in contact with the ground; operating the thrust propulsion unit to drive the propeller, and simultaneously operating the traction drive propulsion unit to drive the wheels, so as to accelerate the vehicle to a predetermined airspeed; and disengaging the traction drive propulsion unit such that no drive is provided to the road wheels, and the propeller drives the vehicle thorough the air.
