    • A thin film actuated mirror is disclosed having a substrate (16), a deformable structure (12) mounted to the substrate (16), and a mirror surface (17) interconnected to the deformable structure such that the mirror surface tilts in response to the deformation of the deformable material layer. The deformation occurs due to the effective strain gradient across the monomorph thickness which is accomplished by varying the electric field across the thickness or the strain parameter across the thickness. The deformable structure (12) includes an active material layer (18) fabricated from a semi-conductive ferroelectric ceramic material and two metal electrodes, each of the electrodes being mounted on opposing surfaces of the active material layer (18), wherein an electrical signal applied across the active material layer (18) between the electrodes causes deformation of the active material layer (18). Alternatively, the active material layer (18) may be fabricated from two layers, an upper layer (36) of an active piezoelectric material and a lower layer (38) of an inactive material.

    • A compact staggered electromagnetically actuated valve assembly (70) includes a first electromagnetic actuator (72) defining an upper horizontal surface (78) and an outer circumference (80) and a second electromagnetic actuator (74) defining a vertical axis (82) and a lower horizontal surface (84). The second actuator lower horizontal surface is located vertically above the first actuator upper horizontal surface and the second actuator vertical axis is disposed outside of the first actuator outer circumference. An electromagnetic actuator (10) for a valve having a valve stem (22) exhibiting thermal expansion is further disclosed. The actuated valve includes an electromagnet (12), valve seating springs (38) and an armature element (16). The seating springs and valve stem have a substantially equal degree of thermal expansion. The valve may further include an armature element adjustement member (52) to axially displace the armature element (16) relative to a normal biased spaced apart first position distal from the electromagnet when the electromagnet is not energized.

    • An improved electromagnetic actuator (10) includes a first assembly (12), a second assembly (14) disposed for relative movement with respect to the first assembly (12) and at least a first flexure (16) interconnecting the first assembly (12) and the second assembly (14). The first assembly (12) includes a core (20) having a first magnetic pole (26) of a first polarity and a second magnetic pole (30) of a second polarity. The second assembly (14) includes an electrical current conductive coil (38) having a first coil portion (40) and a second coil portion (42). The first magnetic pole (26) is in a facing relationship to the first coil portion (40) and the second magnetic pole (30) is in a facing relationship to the second coil portion (42). The first coil portion (40) and the second coil portion (42) are arranged so that an electrical current in the coil develops added a flux current cross products at each of the first coil portion and the second coil portion (42). One of the first assembly (12) and the second assembly (14) includes a magnetic flux return path (44) between the first coil portion (40) and the second coil portion (42).
