    • An electromechanical actuator 10 comprises: a housing 12 having an opening passing therethrough that is centered about an axis 32; a brushless servo motor 22 having a rotor assembly 30 mounted inside said housing for rotation about said axis, said servo motor and a stator 24 encircling the rotor assembly, said servo motor containing a permanent magnet and said stator containing the windings of the servo motor; a tapered circular wedge 25 tightly wedged between the stator and the inner wall of the housing to stationarily support the stator within the housing; a ball screw shaft 65 aligned along the axis and having a tapered end 68 that is tightly secured within a complementary tapered hole in said rotor assembly so that said shaft extends outwardly beyond one end of the rotor assembly, a ball screw nut 66 mounted upon the extended end of said shaft so that said nut moves axially along the shaft as the shaft is rotated by said servo motor; a pushbar unit 75 slidably contained within an end wall of said housing, said pushbar unit being connected to said ball screw nut for movement along said axis; and control means 35 connected to said servo motor for activating the servo motor to advance or retract the push bar unit a desired linear distance.

    • An electromechanical valve includes a cylindrical housing 12 having a first axially disposed chamber 27 containing a valve body 13 and a spool 15 reciprocally mounted in the body for movement along the axis 17 of the housing. A second chamber 32 is located within the housing adjacent to the first chamber and contains a voice coil actuator 30 having a coil holder 50 that is coupled to the spool so that the spool moves linearly when a current is applied to the coil. Materials having a high thermal conductivity are placed in the voice coil actuator for rapidly transmitting heat energy generated in the coil to the housing so that the energy is dissipated into the surrounding ambience before it can damage the actuator.

    • Apparatus for safely installing and removing spring loaded failsafe valve actuators. The apparatus includes a frame (20) that retains a compression spring (45) in a loaded condition between a cover plate (50) fastened to the top wall (22) of the frame and a spring seat (35) slidably contained inside the frame. The spring seat is attached to the valve stem (17) for moving reciprocally therewith between a closed and an open position. The stem is connected to the extendable rod of a remotely controlled actuator (60) that is mounted in the cover plate and arranged to move the stem between the closed and open positions. In the event the actuator fails while the valve is in an open position, the compressed failsafe spring is released to rapidly close the valve.
