    • A PC board actuator (10) that emulates a muscle fiber includes a first pressure source (16), a second pressure source (15) lower than the first source, at least one expansion chamber (24) alternately communicating with the first and second pressure sources, first (18) and second (20) valves mounted with the PC board (13) that open and close the chamber with respect to the first and second pressure sources, and an actuator member (28) interacting with the expansion chamber to apply a force to the object (35). The actuator is preferably formed using planar batch technology and the valves preferably comprise electrically controllable flap valves mounted on the PC board. Alternatively, the actuator includes antagonistically arranged expansion chambers (24,25) that operatively apply reciprocating forces to the object. In other embodiments, the actuator includes plural expansion chambers arranged in series or in parallel in order to increase the overall extent of attainable displacement or to amplify the force generated by the actuator.

    • A low cost, reusable electric paper (100) that uses ferrofluidic colored fluids and an external magnetic writing instrument. The paper can be formed from laminated rolls of polymeric media that are roller die cut, inked, aligned, bonded and cut to an appropriate size. The paper is formed from layers that define a hidden reservoir (126) and a visible reservoir (130) for each of an array of print cells that form a grid on the paper. A ferrofluidic coloring fluid is permanently contained within the paper and can move from the hidden reservoir to the visible reservoir. The size of the cells define the resolution of the paper. Initially, the paper appears white. However, after passing a writing instrument, such as a stylus, over desired print cells, these cells switch from a first hidden bistable state to a second visible bistable state. In the second visible bistable state, the ferrofluidic coloring fluid forms a desired image in a desired color or colors.
