    • A method and apparatus is disclosed for transferring flexible filamentary (FM) material from one rotating winding mandrel (44,46) to another, automatically or semi-automatically in a high speed, dual head, on-line winding apparatus (HSDHWA).
      A simplified transfer mechanism is provided which uses only a single transfer arm (110) and a collector arm (114) for each mandrel (44;46) which results in the transfer mechanism being not only less complex but also more efficient and reliable in effecting a transfer of FM from a wound mandrel to an unwound mandrel. Further, the dual mandrels (44,46) are spaced along a horizontal axis as opposed to a vertical axis of the winding apparatus to enable FM to be fed to the traverse guide (25) in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the HSDHWA with the transverse guide (25) reciprocating in the same perpendicular direction. The traverse mechanism (50) uses a rotating crank (41) and connecting rod (48) mounted to slide within a slider cart to obtain the required controllable reciprocating motion for winding FM onto the mandrels.
