    • An apparatus is disclosed for the reception of a surgical instrument inserted through a cannula assembly. An orifice in a seal member defines a central longitudinal axis in general alignment with the cannula assembly. The seal member includes an elastic member for engaging the surgical object about the orifice and forming a fluid-tight interface. A fiber loop is at least partially embedded in the elastic member and serves to compress central portions of the elastic member around the instrument. The fiber loop may form a loop around the orifice and may cooperate with other fiber loops similarly embedded in the seal.

    • A seal assembly (100) for use with an access device during a surgical procedure includes a housing (204) having a passageway therethrough dimensioned to permit passage of a surgical instrument and being adapted for mounting to a trocar device, and a seal (104) comprising a gel material and being mounted to the housing across the passageway. The seal includes inner seal portions defining an access channel dimensioned to form a substantial sealing relation with an object therethrough and substantially close in the absence of the surgical instrument. The seal preferably comprises a second material (302) having a hardness greater than a hardness of the gel material. The gel material may be selected from the group consisting of urethane gel, silicon gel.

    • A surgical portal apparatus includes a portal housing, an elongated portal member connected to the portal housing and depending therefrom, and a seal member comprising a resilient material and being mounted to the portal housing. The portal housing and the portal member have an axial bore for reception and passage of a surgical object. The seal member includes leading and trailing faces and has inner portions defining a passage to permit passage of a surgical object. One of the leading and trailing faces defines a plurality of recessed cells formed within interconnected struts. The interconnected struts are relatively flexible to flex upon radial offset manipulation of the object to permit corresponding movement of the passage while substantially maintaining a seal about the surgical object. At least some of the recessed cells define a generally rectangular arrangement. Preferably, the leading end face of the seal member has the recessed cells.
