    • The invention relates to a device (1) for monitoring, more particularly controlling, a cutting process carried out on a workpiece (3), comprising: a focussing element (4) for focussing a high-energy beam (2), more particularly a laser beam, onto the workpiece (3); an image capture apparatus (9) for scanning a monitoring region of the workpiece (3) that includes a region (18) of interaction between the high-energy beam (2) and the workpiece (3); and an analysis apparatus (19) designed to analyse the scanned region (18) of interaction and work out at least one characteristic variable (α) of the cutting process, more particularly a kerf (16) formed during the cutting process. The image capture apparatus (9) can be designed to form an observation beam (7a) for observing the region (14) of interaction from an observation direction (R1) at an angle (ß) to the beam axis (13) of the high-energy beam (2), and can include an imaging optical system (14) for generating an image of the region (18) of interaction from the observation direction (R1) at an angle (ß) to the beam axis (13) of the high-energy beam (2). Alternatively or additionally the analysis apparatus (19) can be designed to analyse the scanned region (18) of interaction and work out characteristic variable(s) of the cutting process, namely a cutting front angle (α) in the kerf (16) and/or an amount by which the cutting front angle is greater and/or less than a specified cutting front angle (α
      G ) in the kerf (16), and the device (1) can comprise a controller (20) for controlling the cutting front angle (α) to achieve a specified constant value (α
      G ) by influencing at least one manipulated variable (v, P) of the cutting process. The invention also relates to associated methods.
