    • Watermark symbol detection requires a detection metric for deciding at decoder side which candidate symbol is embedded inside the audio or video signal content. The invention provides an improved detection metric processing that achieves a reliable detection of watermarks in the presence of additional noise and echoes, and that is adaptive to signal reception conditions and requires a decreased computational power. This is performed by taking into account the information contained in the echoes of the received audio signal in the decision metric and comparing it with the corresponding metric obtained from decoding a non-marked audio signal, based on recursive calculation of false positive detection rates of peaks in correlation result values. The watermark symbol corresponding to the reference sequence having the lowest false positive error is selected as the embedded one.

    • Manufacturers of audio processing software plug-ins are losing revenues due to the illegal use of their software. Because unauthorised copying of software cannot be prevented, the question is how to find transgressors and how to prove non-licensed use of such plug-ins. The invention facilitates determining whether non-licensed audio processing software has been used, even without physical access the computer using that software. The original audio processing software includes a watermarking embedder for embedding a watermark in the software-processed audio data stream, in order to identify the audio effects software. The software-processed audio data is always watermarked with an identification string related to the special audio effect software applied.

    • From sets of correlation result values it is determined whether a specific watermark symbol out of one or more candidate watermark symbols is embedded in a received audio signal. For all candidate watermark symbols, from each corresponding set of correlation result values, a group ( n p ) of maximal values together form a peak vector ( v i ). From the normalised peak values (w i ) a probability distribution function (pdf, g (w i )) and a false positive probability function ( P fp (w i )) are calculated. If the values of the false positive probability function are smaller than a first threshold value (T min ), the current candidate watermark symbol is taken as a true watermark symbol. If not yet all candidate watermark symbols have been processed, the next candidate watermark symbol is selected. Otherwise, a minimal value P f p * of the false positive probability functions for all candidate watermark symbols is determined (76) and is compared (77) with a second threshold value (T max ). If it is smaller than the second threshold value, the current candidate watermark symbol is selected. Otherwise, it is determined (78) that no watermark symbol is present.
