    • A convertible sweeper (10) has a main rotating cylindrical brush (24) and a second rotatable cylindrical tool (38). The second tool (38) is movable between a first position in front of the main brush (10) where it rotates to assist in very effectively loading debris comprised mainly of dry leaves, paper, etc. into the hopper (68), and a second position in the upper part of the hopper entrance. There it may be held stationary when the debris to be swept is mainly sand, which is very efficiently swept by the main brush (10) alone, or it may be rotated if the debris also includes some light material, because such rotation assists to a degree in loading that material.

    • A sweeper (10) movable over a surface (14) to be swept includes a frame (12) having a longitudinal axis parallel to the direction of sweeper movement and a debris hopper (68) mounted on a front portion of the frame (12). There is an opening in the rear of the debris hopper (68) to admit debris. A first brush (24) rotates about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the frame (12) and is located behind the debris hopper (68) and has a motor (25) for rotating the brush (24) to throw surface debris forward into the hopper (68). There is a second brush (38) which is also rotatable on an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis of the frame (12), with the second brush (38) being positioned away from the surface (14) to be swept and in front of the first brush (24). There is an auxiliary sweeping lip (76) positioned closely adjacent to the second brush (38), which lip (76) and the second brush (38) add momentum to debris swept by the main brush (24) into the hopper (68), so that the hopper is more fully loaded. The improvement is especially notable when sweeping light debris such as crumpled paper, leaves, etc.

    • A sweeping machine (10) has a wheel (12,14) supported body and a rotatable brush (16) mounted transversely of the direction of machine movement. There is a debris hopper (20) adjacent the brush and a dust collection chamber (24) on the body. A vacuum fan (30) draws dust laden air from the area about the brush (16), through the debris hopper (20), and into the dust collection chamber (24). The improvement comprises a dust control side skirt assembly mounted on each side of the body generally in alignment with the brush (16). Each such assembly includes a flexible inner skirt (54) and a flexible outer skirt (52) spaced from the inner skirt. A flexible spacer (60,62) extends between and is attached to the inner and outer skirts, with the spacer and skirts defining a cavity (70) which has an air opening (72) at a lower portion of the side skirt assembly. The air opening is formed by a discontinuity in the spacer. There is an opening (74) in the inner skirt connecting the cavity (70) with the area about the brush whereby the vacuum fan (30) creates an airflow path through the air opening (72), into the cavity (70), through the inner skirt opening (74) and into the debris hopper and dust collection chamber.
