    • An electro-coagulation printing apparatus comprises a print head including a drive mechanism having a columnar-shaped anode, which has a horizontally extending, central longitudinal shaft and an anode active surface and is formed by an electro-chemically inactive metal, the drive mechanism serving to revolve the anode about the longitudinal shaft of the anode at substantially constant speed, and a coating device for coating the anode active surface with an oily substance to form micro liquid droplets of the oily substance on the surface, the print head permitting electro-coagulation of colloid, which contains a coloring agent and coagulates electrolytically, to form dots of the coloring coagulation coloid representative of a desired image on the anode active surface coated with the oily substance. The apparatus of the invention further comprises a transfer device for contacting a substrate with dots of the coloring coagulation colloid to transfer the coloring coagulation colloid to the substrate from the anode active surface to thereby print an image on the substrate, and a cleaning device for cleaning the anode active surface to remove the remaining coagulated colloid, the cleaning device being disposed below the anode and the coating device. Such apparatus can print an image of high resolution.

    • Electrocoagulation printing method and apparatus are provided which prevents formation of undesirable background (fogging) on electrocoagulation printed images. The apparatus includes: a revolving cylinder (12) formed of an electrolytically inert metal and having a continuous passivated surface (12B) as a positive electrode active surface moving along a predetermined path; an inker (32) which feeds electrocoagulation printing ink for the surface (12B); a printing head (30) for forming on the surface (12B) dots of coagulated ink by electrocoagulation; an oil cascade unit (40) which supplies a first oily substance for the surface (12B) and removes fogging ink mixed with the first oily substance from the surface (12B) without altering the dots of coagulated ink; and a pressure roller (70) which brings a printing substrate (80) into contact with the dots of coagulated ink to cause transfer of the dots of coagulated ink from the surface (12B) to the printing substrate (80). The oil cascade unit (40) allows the fogging ink mixed with the first oily substance to be dislodged from the surface (12B) without altering the dots of coagulated ink, and therefore, formation of an undesirable background (fogging) on a printed images can be prevented.

    • An electrocoagulation printing ink which comprises a liquid dispersion comprising a polymer capable of electrolytical coagulation, a liquid medium, a soluble electrolyte, a pigment, and a dispersant for evenly dispersing the pigment in the dispersion, and in which the dispersant is an alkali metal salt of a naphthalenesulfonic acid/formaldehyde condensate; and an electrocoagulation printing method using the same. By using this dispersant, storage stability is improved and undesirable colored scumming formed in the prints obtained by electrocoagulation printing is mitigated. In chemical formula (I), M is an alkali metal and n is an integer of about 2 to about 15.

    • An electrocoagulation printing apparatus comprises a positive cylindrical electrode having a central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and a positive electrode active surface, the positive electrode being formed of an electrolytically inert metal; a drive mechanism for rotating the positive electrode about the longitudinal axis thereof at a substantially constant speed; a coating device for coating the positive electrode active surface with an oily substance to form on the surface micro-droplets of oily substance; and a printing head for forming on the oily substance-coated positive electrode active surface a plurality of dots of colored, coagulated colloid by electrocoagulation of an electrolytically coagulable colloid in the presence of a coloring agent, the dots of colored, coagulated colloid being representative of a desired image. The apparatus of the invention further comprises a transfer device for bringing a substrate into contact with the dots of colored, coagulated colloid to cause transfer of the colored, coagulated colloid from the positive electrode active surface onto the substrate and thereby imprint the substrate with the image; and a cleaning device for cleaning the positive electrode active surface to remove therefrom any remaining coagulated colloid, the cleaning device being disposed under the positive electrode and below the coating device. Such an apparatus is capable of printing images of high definition.
