    • A method and apparatus for machining a rotating workpiece to have a predetermined profile employs a linear motor (22) to reciprocate a cutting tool (16) toward and from the rotating surface of the workpiece (15). An armature (24) of the linear motor (22) is mounted on a pivoted toolholder (18), which is mounted in frictionless bearings, to reduce substantially the apparent moment of inertia of the combined toolholder (18) and armature (24) and the frictional forces to be overcome. The armature (24) is positioned relative to the tool (16) to provide a substantial mechanical advantage to increase the application force of the tool (16) against the workpiece (15). The stiffness is high as likewise are the work turning speed and the tool reciprocation speed, thereby reducing substantially the cutting time relatively to a conventional piston turning machine cutting time.
