    • A stretch leveler comprises a conveying element (1) on the input side, a bending element (2), and a conveying element (3) on the output side. A belt (6) is fed to the bending element (2) at an input speed (v1) and removed at an output speed (v2). The output speed (v2) is higher than the input speed (v1) so that the belt (6) is plastically extended. The belt (6) is deflected alternately upwards and downwards in the bending element (2) by means of rolls (10) of the bending element (2), said rolls attached to the belt (6). The conveying element (1) on the input side is controlled to a target speed value (v1*) on the input side, the conveying element (3) is controlled to a target speed value (v2*) on the output side. The input speed (v1) and the output speed (v2) are detected. From these detected speeds, an elongation actual value (e) is determined for the belt (6). The elongation actual value (e) and an elongation target value (e*) are fed to an elongation control (15) that determines a tension target value (Z*) from the fed values (e, e*). The tension target value (Z*) is limited to a maximum tension target value (ZMAX*). A tension actual value (Z) is determined. The tension actual value (Z) and the tension target value (Z*) are fed to a tension control (16) that determines an additional speed target value (deltav*) from the fed values (Z, Z*) that is added to the speed target value (v2*) on the output side.
