    • A method and apparatus for generating user preference data regarding the color characteristic of an image and a method and apparatus for converting image color preference using the method and apparatus is provided. The method for generating user preference data comprises (a) obtaining an image color characteristic value of a preference image and a reference image, (b) generating {preference value, reference value} which corresponds to a pair of the preference value and the reference value, and (c) generating the pair {preference value, reference value} as preference meta-data having at least one feature block. The method for converting image color preference comprises calculating a color characteristic value with respect to an input image, generating preference meta-data having at least one feature block, the feature block comprising a block header including a feature identifier corresponding to information identifying a color characteristic and at least one feature descriptor including the preference value and the reference value, obtaining a color characteristic value with respect to the input image using the calculated color characteristic value of the input image and the color preference data, and converting the color characteristic of the input image so that the input image has the obtained color characteristic value.

    • Provided is a method for rendering image signals, which represent a predetermined number of colors, in an apparatus used for rendering an image signal that has a plurality of pixels composed of three different sub-pixels among four or more different sub-pixels. The method for rendering image signals comprises (a) selecting three-color signals out of the four or more color signals to be outputted according to a type of sub-pixel, which forms a predetermined pixel, (b) obtaining values of the selected three-color signals in peripheral pixels of the pixels, (c) calculating brightness values of each sub-pixel of the pixel by using the values of the selected three-color signals and corresponding color signal values of the peripheral pixels, and (d) driving a display, which controls brightness of an image that is represented in the display according to the calculated brightness values of sub-pixels.

    • Provided are a method of improving the gradation of an image, and an image display apparatus for performing the method. The method is to improves gradations of an image carried out by a liquid crystal display including a liquid crystal driving unit for generating a liquid crystal driving signal in response to voltage, which is selected in accordance with the size of an image signal from liquid crystal driving voltages each classified by first and second fields which constitutes a unit frame, and a liquid crystal display panel for being driven in response to the liquid crystal driving signal and displaying the image, the method includes (a) measuring luminance levels of an image displayed on the liquid crystal display panel while changing the liquid crystal driving voltage per frame; (b) determining at least one luminance level section whose gradations needs to be improved from the measured luminance levels; (c) producing new liquid crystal driving voltages to be increased or decreased centering around the liquid crystal driving voltage related to lowest luminance level per the first and second fields in each determined luminance level section; (d) obtaining new luminance levels using the produced new liquid crystal driving voltages; (e) selecting at least one available first luminance level from the new luminance levels; and (f) checking whether the gradations of the image are improved using the first luminance level, and/or returning back to step (e) if the gradations are not improved. According to this method, it is possible to increase the number of gradations of an image and make irregular difference between luminance levels of gradations regular, thereby improving the quality of the image.
