    • A yarn winding apparatus comprises two clutches (20,21), the input sides of which are continuously driven in opposed directions by a motor (18) or by respective motors (18,19). At any given moment one of the clutches (20) is engaged whilst the other (21) is disengaged, so that yarn traversing apparatus (13,14) is driven in a first direction to move the yarn (12) in one direction along a traverse path to a predetermined end of stroke location, whereupon a control device (22) causes disengagement of the one clutch (20) and engagement of the other clutch (21) to drive the yarn traversing apparatus (13,14) in the opposite direction and hence the yarn (12) in the reverse direction along the traverse path.
      Preferably the clutches (20,21) are electrorheological fluid or magneto-rheological suspension clutches, each of which is coupled to a respective one of two spaced pulleys (15,16) around which travels an endless band (14), having a traversing yarn guide (13) thereon. The control device (22) may be programmable to vary the traverse speed and end of stroke locations to avoid patterning and ridged or collapsed package ends.

    • In a yarn false twist texturing process in which yarn (17) is passed through heating and cooling zones (14, 15) to a false twist device (16), the yarn (17) is passed in a helical path around a cylinder (19) at opposed ends of which yarn guides (26, 27) are disposed to provide the helical path, preferably through the cooling zone (15). In order to raise the surge speed at which the process becomes unstable, at least one of the yarn guides (26) is positionally adjustable relative to another guide (27) and/or a third guide (23) is located between the other two (26, 27) so as to increase the helix angle of the yarn path and the effective angle of wrap around a cylindrical cooling device (19) on which the guides (23, 26, 27) are mounted. The cooling cylinder (19) may be a tube to which suction (22) is applied to draw fumes from the yarn (17) as it passes over a port (21) in the tube (19) and to draw ambient air into the tube (19) to assist the cooling effect. The non-abrupt changes in direction of the yarn path allows the twist to run back through the cooling and heating zones (15, 14).

    • A twist stop device (10;28) for a false twist texturing machine comprises a roller having an array of wear resistant pins (22) extending outwardly to define a V-shaped zig-zag path for a yarn (27) passing therearound, and a pair of walls (12) disposed adjacent the array of pins (22) on opposite sides thereof to support the pins (22) and facilitate threading of the yarn (27) around the device (10;28). The roller is in two parts (11,19;20,30) each comprising a wall (12) and portion (13) of a hub part of the roller, the two parts (11,19;29,30) when assembled retaining the pins (22) in their locations and a bearing (16) within the hub parts (13). The pins (22) are at equi-angularly spaced locations, with a slot (26) at at least one location where no pin (22) is present to facilitate removal of yarn wraps (27).
